Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was on TV this weekend, and I watched most of it for a second time. I’d normally be pretty disparaging of a post-modern set in Hollywood, but the film’s redeemed by great performances from Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer (both underappreciated actors, I think) and a wicked-sharp script. It’s chock full of hilarious, film noiresque dialogue:
Perry: Did your dad love you?
Harry: Only when I dressed up like a beer bottle, how about you?
Perry: Well, he used to beat me in morse code, so it’s possible, but he never said the words.
I also liked Val Kilmer in Spartan, another failure at the box office with fantastic dialogue. Hmm…looking at Kilmer’s filmography, he’s kind of been box office poison in recent years, hasn’t he?
I *loved* Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Another great, but underrated, Kilmer film is The Salton Sea. You should check it out if you haven’t seen it already.
