Quote of the Year on the Downtown Stadium Proposal

Vancouver residents will be aware of one of this year’s more interesting urban planning controversies: the proposal for a downtown soccer stadium.

There are plenty of proponents (myself included) and a vocal opposing minority. In any case, I read this hilarious, surly quote from Vancouver Sun columnist and stadium supporter Cam Cole. One of his predictions for 2007:

Greg Kerfoot’s downtown soccer stadium project is torpedoed by protests, because the hemp shop owners and homeless people and crackheads in the neighbourhood have so many better ideas for what to do with the air above the railyards.

That’s hyperbole, but I do sympathize with the sentiment.

  1. I don’t have a strong stand either way on the downtown stadium, but writers like Cam Cole and quotes like this are the reason I don’t read the Sun. Mr. Cole should remember that it’s the advocacy groups that make the most noise, not the people (yes addicts are people) addicted that are making the noise about this.
