Are the Pittsburgh Penguins Coming to Canada?

Sportsnet reports that Blackberry magnate Jim Balsillie has purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins for roughly $175 million:

A source familiar with the discussions told globesports that Balsillie is expected to keep the team in Pittsburgh and he has no intention of moving it to Hamilton, Ont. There had been speculation that Balsillie wanted to buy a franchise and move it to Hamilton, which is close to his home and RIM’s head office in Waterloo.

That sounds fairly definitive, but I’ve heard that song and dance before. Michael Heisley acquired the Vancouver Grizzlies, gave lip service to keeping the team in Canada, then promptly moved them to bear-rich Memphis.

If I live in Hamilton or Winnipeg, I’m getting on my Blackberry and starting an email campaign to get Mr. Balsillie to move the team north.

  1. It’s no less preposterous than LA Lakers (formerly of Minnesota), and best of all, the Utah Jazz (ex of New Orleans). Because nothing evokes thoughts of smoky jazz clubs like Salt Lake City.

  2. Winnipeg, maybe. Despite the arena, and everything that Hamilton has going for it, it will never happen. The Leafs and Buffalo Sabres will not allow any encroachment into their “territory”. Unfortunate, but true.
