Never Mind the Bollocks, Here Comes DirectGov

Via Digg, I read this story, which is a classic media relations placement. The story, entitled “Web users ‘only visit six sites'”, cites ‘research’ (providing no details on methodology, I might add) saying that “half of internet-using Britons (51 per cent) visit just six or less sites on a regular basis.”

Shockingly, this survey dovetails nicely into DirectGov, a new UK ‘one-stop-shop website’ for all kinds of government services. This actually seems like a really good idea, enabling Britons to simultaneously pay council taxes, renew library books and get graffiti removed. I’m just a little bitter about the stupid faux-survey designed specifically to support their message.

I’m more bitter about the hilarious page entitled Help with linking to Directgov. Here are 650 words on how to link to their website. The best bit is at the bottom:

You should not seek to associate Directgov with your site or any non-Directgov content. Nor should you suggest any endorsement or approval by Directgov of you, your website or any non-Directgov product or content.

Restrictions on sites which can link to Directgov
We do not permit a website to link to Directgov if it contains material which is libellous, defamatory, pornographic, obscene, or is in any way a breach of the laws of England and Wales or infringes any third party intellectual property rights.

Removal of links
If we contact you to remove your links to Directgov, you must do so immediately.

So, I guess linking with something like Directgov.co.uk fully fucking endorses my Chevy Metro is strictly out of the question? I wonder if they’ll come calling.

But I jest. In truth, it looks like a brilliant site. I have no idea if you can actually get anything done with it, but it certainly looks like you can.

  1. ‘ providing no details on methodology ‘. Quite. In fact very few details seem to be forthcoming about the survey – period.

‘ The research, published today by Directgov ‘ says Webuser. Really ? Maybe I missed it, but there doesn’t seem to be any news about it DirectGuv site . . . Errrrr . . . just where was it published exactly ?

Maybe it’s hidden away there somewhere. Can anyone find it ? I can’t . . . and I’d like to.
