As the title suggests, Urinetown is an offbeat musical concerned with pee. Here’s a summary from a recent Georgia Straight preview:
Urinetown, which runs at the Firehall from Wednesday (January 11) until January 28, tells the story of an uprising of the poor. Its style sends up the idealism of the late 1940s, but the musical is set in the future. There’s been a long, severe drought, and water consumption is restricted to the point where everybody is forced to pee in pay toilets. Nobody gets to wee in the bushes; that kind of anarchy resulted in a period known as the Stink Years. Now urination is regulated through a private corporation called Urine Good Company, which is run by Uber-capitalist Caldwell B. Cladwell, Brazeau’s character.
My theatre friends speak highly of it (as does Broadway–it’s won three Tony awards)–it’s apparently very funny. I’ve only heard three songs, but it’s likely to be my first theatre experience of the year. Here’s one such song, kind of a book number:
I see the Straight’s also running a contest for tickets, with the deadline for entry on Tuesday.
Hmm, I don’t think that song is much good on it’s own. I’d say it suffers from being dependent on stage action too much.
Sounds like a good idea for a show anyway, I must keep an eye out for it if it ever lands this side of the Atlantic.
