Don’t Steal Bandwidth

The Hall of Technical Documentation Weirdness is pretty popular. It’s been Slashdotted a couple of times, and is usually a top-five page on my site (even though it’s way overdue for an update). Occasionally, somebody hotlinks to the images in the Hall. I generally don’t notice, unless it generates enough traffic to percolate up into the top 30-referring URLs for a give month. Then I sometimes take action.

In this case, I modified the images in question, so that the perpetrators have a cheeky new look to their Web site (screenshot is here, as I’ll take these doctored images down in a couple of days as well). Here’s a decent polemic on why stealing bandwidth is bad. Ray vanderWoning has a similar approach.

I guess I should really implement this fix in .htaccess, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.

  1. Ah yes, the joys of swapping hotlinked images.
