Jacques points out this amusing headline in the Malta Star newspaper:
Gay couples to be considered for adoption
Sweet! Not only are they neater than babies, but they’re better income earners, too.
Speaking of adoption, I read an article about China tightening the rules on adoption in the Vancouver Sun over the weekend. This fact suprised me:
More children are adopted from China each year than from any other country, accounting for more than half of all foreign adoptions in Canada. In British Columbia, 104 foreign adoptions in 2005 originated in China, out of a total of 269.
There were only 269 foreign adoptions in BC last year? I have no sense of these things, but that sounded very low to me.
I did some further investigation, and I gather that there are typically about 2000 foreign adoptions across the country each year. I know it’s a really arduous process, but I’d have thought there would be more.
But, then, I found this (slightly dubious) FAQ, which indicated that the number of domestic adoptions are measured in the hundreds, not the thousands, each year. Interesting.
