James Mirtle links to a Globe and Mail article about the thrashing the Kazaks laid on Thailand earlier today. Kazakhstan won 52-1 (in an ice hockey game at the Asian Winter Games). Borat must be pleased:
Rolanti is a former college player at Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., who was managing a chain of English schools in Bangkok when he was asked to help coach the national team. “We only have about 40 guys in the whole country to pick from,” said Rolanti.
The Thais were outshot 97-7, with six of those shots coming in the third period as the Thais managed a few chances, including one breakaway which was stopped by Ogureshnikov.
The Kazahstani goalie, one Sergey Ogureshnikov, didn’t end up with a very good save percentage, though. He only stopped four of five shots.
Kazakhstan is currently ranked 11th in the world. Thailand didn’t make the list. Ireland did, which is ironic because the have two fewer arenas than Thailand, for a grand total of zero.
D’oh, I’m totally wrong. According to the Irish Ice Hockey Association, Ireland has its first permanent indoor ice arena. It’s in Dundalk, in County Louth, close to Northern Ireland (where they’ve got a nice big arena in Belfast).
Darren, you’re too damn Canadian. It took you until the last paragraph to mention parenthetically that you’re talking about ice hockey. I didn’t know what sport you were discussing until then. 🙂
Derek: Quite right, actually. I should know better, having learned to use the term ‘ice hockey’ in Dublin. I’ve amended the post accordingly.
Ah, it’s nice that the Google Ads on this page are serving up thinly-veiled Thai sex tourism ads: ‘Meet hundreds of Thai women During our 10 day tours to Bangkok’.
I get the same thing over here in Malaysia. When I talk about hockey, most people assume I’m talking about what I would call field hockey.
It was cool that Malaysia won a game at the Asiad in Changchun (against the hapless Hong Kong team), but then they got spanked by South Korea. Oh well, maybe next time.
