Firefly Becomes a MMPORG

Firefly was the critically-acclaimed, short-lived, space-as-old-West sci-fi series from the fertile mind of Joss Whedon. This was followed by the good but unpopular feature film Serenity. Fans have clamoured for another season or film set in this universe, but none have been forthcoming:

Canceled in the United States after only 11 episodes, Firefly has become the Star Trek of 21st-century sci-fi fandom: a show that seemed to remake the genre even as it stayed faithful to the conventions of “hard” science fiction, like engine room problems and menacing hordes lurking on the edge of known space.

What made the show special was the wry, often self-deprecating humor of its characters, from the captain with the checkered past to the unwittingly sexy engineer, the dull hunk of a mercenary with a girl’s name, and the mysterious young woman passenger with special gifts.

That comes from this Wired article, discussing the launch of developing on a massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game based in the Firefly universe.

Multiverse is building the game. They also built (and then horribly broke) Star Wars Galaxies, so they’ve got a pretty good pedigree. Of course, basing an MMPORG on a known property isn’t a reliable model for success. As MMOGChart.com shows us, The Matrix Online crashed and burned horribly.

  1. While this is interesting news, I doubt it will really be popular. What was fun in the series in the clever, witsy, slapstick humour dialogs and cool characters.

  2. Sounds like a good premise. Might want to look at gettgin Mike Miller to consult as firefly has the feel of coming stright out fo the traveller universe
