Congratulations to my friends Lesley and Eric, who on December 4 had their third (third!) child, Lucas James Butler. From Eric’s blog:
He is a little overbaked. 9 pounds 9 ounces and a very long 56 cm. He is wrinkled and peeling…too long in the bath.
Another huge baby, what’s going on? Regardless, Lesley was, uh, born to give birth, as I understand her labour was, like, two hours.
As I sometimes do with the newborns, I’ve registered www.lucasbutler.com (currently forwarding to his Dad’s blog), should the kid ever require a personal domain.
That is the dumbest baby gift ever. The kid’s not going to be literate until he’s what, 6? And I can’t see a kid in early elementary school having a use for his own website. Maybe I have no imagination though.
By the time the kid might be capable of setting a website up, the internet might be completely different and domains as we know them may no longer exist. In the meantime, you wasted $10-20 per year on a domain that was never used. Why not put that money into a savings fund for the child? Or donate money to charity in the kid’s name; you say you do this for friends at Christmas already.
What you’re doing is essentially throwing your money away on a cute, but pointless, idea.
There is a place, I think, for cute, pointless ideas such as this. The parents really seem to get a kick out of it.
