I love a number of Robert Altman films–MASH, Short Cuts, Gosford Park, and virulently dislike at least one–Pret a Porter. Regardless, I always knew that when I went to an Altman film I wouldn’t be bored.
I almost wrote that Hollywood has lost one of the greats, but Altman was something of a maverick who eschewed the establishment. We’ve all lost a great filmmaker and storyteller.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rarely gets things right, but they gave him an Honorary Oscar last year. That’s after he was nominated for “Best Director” five times, and never won.
Pret a Porter really was awful.
Don’t forget “Popeye”.
Actually, do.
