Regular web surfers have probably seen this striking video of some dude sitting in Central Park playing “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. He is quite a viruoso with the mini-guitar.
As it turns out, that’s just the tip of the ukulele iceberg. Midnight Ukulele Disco hosts hundreds such tunes, most of which seem to have been recorded at a weekly ukulele (and banjo) cabaret. There’s comedy and tragedy (pastoral, pastoral-comical, historical-pastoral, tragical-historical…) on this well-designed site. Some of my favourites are rock covers by Gio Gaynor, who rocks out with Sweet Child O’ Mine and Psycho Killer.
I can’t let a ukulele thread go by without pimping my friend James Hill. He’s a great guy, and a hell of a ukue player – he’s played a bunch of shows with Jake Shimabukuro, the guy playing the Beatles in Central Park. Some of his stuff is up on Midnight Ukulele Disco – check it out.
I was in a band with James once – talk about a humbling experience. That guy can wail.
I however, can’t let a post on the uke go by without mentioning Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Awesome. Not a wailer in this one, but a legend. And, a really big guy.
Hey Darren, thanks for this posting. It’s a true gift to the world! 😉
Here is an excellent ukulele cover please check it out and leave a comment.
