Many thanks to Joe, who helped me right the ship this morning. He tells me that I should:
Reinstall a new virtual host and move the blog to that site so you are guaranteed you are not running loads of old obsolete crap, that stuff will cause problems over time.
Indeed, I shall get on that. I have no time for old, obsolete crap.
