For the Locals: Upcoming Events You May Enjoy

I’ve been meaning to blog about sundry local events that were of interest to me and might be of interest to you. Here they are:

November 5 – The WorldChanging Book Tour Comes to Vancouver – " Please join us for an evening of big ideas and fun people. We’ll also be having a little after party." I’ve enjoyed reading the WorldChanging blog, so I’ll probably drop by.

November 23 – John Atkin & Peter Fairchild on the history of the Pantages Theatre – "On Hastings Street, just off Main, behind a rather unassuming façade is a jewel box of a space that is not only Vancouver’s oldest surviving theatre but the oldest Pantages Theatre in North America. Erected in 1907, it was only the second purpose-built theatre constructed by Alexander Pantages of a chain that would number over 150 theatres." I have an interest in theatre architecture, and have always wanted to get inside this space. This event is at the Vancouver Museum, but maybe I can convince somebody to give me a tour. Or at least the keys to the front door.

December 7 – Social Media Club Vancouver – "Social Media Club is being organized for the purpose of sharing best practices, establishing ethics and standards, and promoting media literacy around the emerging area of Social Media." I’m not really sure what this is about, but it’s at the Bryght office and has ‘social media’, so I should probably go.

Regularly through the fall – Final Draught – "A great evening of listening to plays, sketch, features, shorts, specs, animation, radio or even puppet plays. The bonus is, there will be immediate feedback from 2 panelists who work in the industry (as writers, directors, readers or producers)." I won’t have anything to submit for a while, but I’ll probably drop by at least one of the readings.

  1. One more event to add. Over on the Raincoast blog I’m running a contest for two tickets to Gordon Pascoe’s play GONZO.

Gonzo is based on Gordon’s wartime experience as a child in a prison camp in Shanghai, China (1942-45).

How to enter: just post in my comments field.
