An iPod in Diagnostic Mode?

Diagnostic ModeHas your iPod ever entered ‘diagnostic mode’? Over the weekend, I was out and about. I pulled my iPod out of my pocket, and low and behold, it presented me with a very different view of its world.

Instead of the usual UI, I got a no-frills list of testing and debugging options. I played around for a bit, but really I just wanted to listen to NSYNC. So, I did the magic restart-your-iPod button combination, and all was right in the world. Peculiar, eh?

If you want to put your iPod into the fancy diagnostic mode, here are some instructions.

I’m kidding about NSYNC, okay?

  1. I have a 5th gen iPod (30GB). I think I may have a disk problem and I want to do a HDscan using the diags. I only have two options, HDSpecs & HDSMARTData. Do I need to do something special to get the HDScan option?
