Who are the Weepies?

I’m so glad you asked. In the words of Wikipedia:

The Weepies are an indie pop-folk band fronted by singer-songwriters Steve Tannen and Deb Talan. Their music has been described as “soft, safe acoustic pop”. The two musicians, who were both active in separate singer-songwriter careers, met in 2001 at a show Tannen was playing at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. They quickly found a deep musical bond and began playing together. In 2005, they were signed to Nettwerk Records. Currently, Tannen and Talan reside together in Topanga, California.

They’re a little like Iron & Wine with less soul (the concept, not the James Brown). I know my taste in music should be more adventurous than earnest, “soft, safe acoustic pop”, but what’re you going to do? I can’t be arsed at the moment.

Thanks to Sarah for introducing me to these folks.

  1. The Deb Talan solo (pre-Weepies) stuff is also definitely worth checking out. To get truly old-school Deb, you’ll have to scour a Portland used-CD store (or get really lucky at Amazon) for old copies of Hummingfish CDs “Hover” and “Love Tractor.”
