John Campea, the editor of The Movie Blog, is mighty pissed off. Despite being a long and loyal supporter of the Paramount Pictures’ film The Transformers (yes, they’re more than meets the eye), he got a cease and desist letter for posting “a candid picture of 4 actors standing around off camera posing for a picture together”. He wrote an angry response (linked to digg.com, as the Movie Blog is currently suffering the ‘digg effect’):
If this is how you treat people… then that is how you shall be treated. From now on The Movie Blog will not mention, reference or talk about anything to do with your movie or your project. Heavens forbid that I may say something that you don’t like and wake up to find my site taken down again.
It’s a bit ranty, and too long for a really good complaint letter, but the Paramount folks have shot themselves in the foot here. John’s is, for my money, the most popular movie blog out there. Not only are they going to miss that coverage, but this story is getting dugg to death (it went from 22 diggs to 912 in a couple of hours).
Strong work, Paramount. Way to create good will amongst your biggest fans.
Just a slight correction, for the record. John wrote that he did not receive any complaint (or C&D) from Paramount, directly, and that they went straight to his hosting company. The hosting company knocked his site offline for about 7 or 8 hours.
Well, it looks like there’s a certain movie I won’t be paying to see.
