A while back I wrote about freeganism, which is essentially veganism plus dumpster diving. From freegan.info:
“Freegan†is an amalgamation of the words “free†and “veganâ€Â. Vegans are people who avoid products from animal sources or products tested on animals in an effort to avoid harming animals. Freegans take this a step further by recognizing that in a complex, industrial mass-production society economy driven by profit, abuses of humans, animals, and the Earth abound at all levels of production from acquisition to raw materials to production to transportation.
As a result, Miyoung Lee from the CBC contacted me to ask if I knew any local freegans or freeganism organizations. Besides the guys with the shopping carts in my back alley, I don’t. And I’m not sure their motivation is to voluntarily opt out of our mass-production society.
With her permission, I thought I’d extend her question into the local blogosphere in case anybody is hooked up with the local freegan community (or has any creative ideas on how to get hooked up). My best suggestion was to try the local Freecycling list. I know they’re different things, but they’re along the same continuum.
If you have any bright ideas or connections for Miyoung, you can contact her at miyoung_lee [at] cbc [dot] ca or 604-662-6833.
Try Quest Outreach Society (www.questoutreach.org). I used to work for them and they reclaim food / divert food from landfills. They tend to know a lot of food activists.
I’m reminded of that “fuitarian” girl that appears in… in… well, in some romantic comedy with Hugh Grant. She was a vegetarian who would only eat plants that had died from natural causes (such as fruit that fell from a tree).
“So the carrots in this salad…?”
“Yes. They were murdered.”
That would be ‘Notting Hill’, an underappreciated film, I think.
Hi Darrenbarefoot
I came across your site searching for other Vancouver Bloggers. I am not a full fledged freegan however I have partaken in getting free food that has been left in the dumster and have lived to tell about it. Many of my clothes and my boyfriends clothes are from the dumster. I have gone to Granville island on Saturday night, bag in hand and waited for them (the vendors) to come out and place their one day old food in the dumster. I pick backberries in the alleyways and grow a lot of food in containers on my deck. A rule of thumb though is I only take what I need.
Anyhow I will be adding you to my blogroll if you don’t mind under Vancouver Bloggers.
