Six Ways You Won’t Die

Via digg, here are six methods of dying that scare people, but rarely actually occur. Among the most irrational is being killed by a shark:

According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), though, only 1,909 confirmed shark attacks have occurred around the world–between 1580 and 2003! Of these, 737 happened in the United States, and 38 people died as a result. That said, what are your real odds of being attacked by a shark? One in 11.5 million, says the ISAF. Being killed by a shark? Zero in 264.1 million.

Of course, if you live in Florida, presumably the odds of shark-related death shoot right up. The article concludes with the US’s actual leading causes of death, most of which are avoidable.

  1. Er, “zero in 264.1 million”? Isn’t that just, y’know, zero? And therefore inaccurate, since “38 people died as a result” in the US betweeen 1580 and 2003?
