I’ve been playing games since Zork 3, and I’ve done contract work for a couple of game developers. As such, I understand that the pressure on development teams and rapidly evolving markets can result in an abnormally buggy product.
When I bring games home from the store, the first thing I do–before installing them–is visit the game’s website and download the patch (or, more often, patches) I need to get the post-release bug fixes.
I picked up Fable: The Lost Chapters on the cheap at Future Shop. It had a fair bit of buzz when released, and the critics liked it. As I started playing it, it seemed like a decent enough slice-and-dice RPG in the style of Dungeon Siege.
Then came the plague of locusts.
The game freezes and crashes back to my desktop with shocking regularity. I’d say it happens half of the sessions I’ve played so far. This would be more tolerable if the clever developers at Lionhead Studios let me save whenever I want. Instead, I may lose a half or three-quarters of an hour of progress when the machine crashes. Note to Lionhead and Microsoft Games Studios: games are meant to be fun, and this isn’t.
I’m confident in describing the game as buggy because my machine is about four weeks old with a standard Windows installation and easily exceeds the system requirements. In fact, Fable is the first game I’ve installed. Also, I can find plenty of corroborating reports online.
I’m afraid Fable is destined for the shelf, or the local Freecycle group.
Get it on console then you pillock!
Luke Rodgers you fucking moron
Ok Luke… Why? Why should he have to get it on the console when he has a PC and has the game already for PC? Why did you Post this completely useless response to his post Luke Rodgers? His is a valid issue and I have actually been searching around for a patch to fix bugs on it myself just like him. Then along comes some asshat kid has to post a completely useless and unhelpful comment just to be a pain in the arse.
Yes the game is very buggy, I enjoy the game if they would just release some kinda patch to deal with some of those issues
Bahaha, well said. Bloody idiot if he originally bought it for the PC there is no need to purchase another copy!!
Uh… isn’t the pc version supposed to have more than the console version anyway? :p
I am in dire need of a patch of some sort as well. I’m unable to play the game to the best of my computer’s abilities because it thinks my computer has a 1GHz processor, when it actually has a 2.2GHz proc. I’m 100% sure on this, there’s no way that I’m wrong about it. the game is reading my proc incorrectly. I think I’m going to try reinstalling it and seeing what it does then… will reply back later if it works.
I am also having troubles with the game and I have had it installed for about 10 minutes now. I am having sound issues and have found no patch or even a troubleshooting guide to deal with the error. I have absolutely no sound. If anyone has a solution it would be helpful. Maybe even a guess. That would help too.
I bought the game recently, played it for a while. It seemed like a decent game. Then it crashed to the desktop. I thought it must be a one time thing so I restarted it. About a half hour later the same thing happened again, and like you said I had to do about 75% of my progress all over again. It’s no fun that way. I buy games for my amusement, not to give me headaches of frustration. Now I have to wait for a patch until I can continue playing. I like the game in itself but I have to say if I had known about this before I bought it I would have taken another game instead. I hope they release a patch soon as I really want to continue playing.
im having trouble too ive had the game for a while now and i played it through once and stopped playing it for a while. wen i went to launch it a few days ago it wouldnt start. i clicked on the dektop icon nothing happened. i launched it for the cd nothing happened. all i want to do it play the damn game. my computers got a 2.1 ghz processor, 512mb ram, and a ati raedon 9550. as i said i played the whole way through the game before i had any major problems.
i recently purchased the game and i have had the same problem with fable crashing to the desktop… again… and again… and again… sometimes i do get a runtime error msg and my desktop resolution will not correct itsef from the games 800×600 to my desktops 1280×1024… microsoft does have some troubleshooting help on their site( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905587/en-us ) as far as i can understand it mostly a grphics issue… but microsoft doesnt offer any patches just recommends updating video drivers which didnt help… im running fable on a 2.2g 1024mbram radeon 9250…
oi, not to mention that once i beat the game and tried to start over hte only quests available to me were the ones i hadn’t done in my last game, its now been 6 months and 3 formats since the first one and i still have the quests in the final areas unlocked WTF?????? oh and the liscence agreement states that windows is stealing info about you for “online services” DO NOT BUY THIS GAME
I’ve been playing on PC for far more hours than I care to admit and I’ve never had it crash once on me. Never had to patch the game or update drivers either.
Played it on a fairly low-spec machine and its never once crashed on me eithier.
Enjoyed playing it and would recommend it.
Just bought the game 2 days ago…. played for 48 hours straight…. it crashed on me and i lost alllll my progress. it wont even allow me to load my last save file because it is now corrupt. not a fun experience
much as I enjoy the game, it does indeed crash with an alarming regularity, and the inability to save properly during quests makes the crashes much more than just a mere annoyance
as for the ever so helpful console suggestion, while the Lost Chapters version is available on console, why oh why would anyone fork out their hard earned money for a console for the sake one one game? a game they already own on a superior (debatably, I grant you, but since my PC is infinitely upgradeable I consider it to be at least superior in potential and a much more sound investment) platform?
anyway, with a patch, Fable could well take its place as one of the greats
OK, here’s the deal. Basically, the game crashes because it is heavily graphics intensive. In a way as yet unseen. On the bright side, my PC’s graphics card is totally hench and I can play without any problems (crashed once. then i just had to muck around in control panel for 5 mins to sort out the paging file)
Alright im 11 years olf but that thing about is as true as there being a earth.i played it on my unkels computer for a year nerely every time! but like luke said i got it on the xbox and i must say it has less content but the lagging happens when theres like 100 people are on the sreen and the “crashing” has never happend. But i must also say that the computer virsion sucks.also dont waste your money on the xbox if you already have it when i say theres less content I MEAN IT.
To all people talking about the console version… Why are you here? This is a forum talking about the PC version. If the console version works fine, then go play with you console. and while your at it buy World of Warcraft for your console, it is a great game. Oh yea thats right it’s not on a console. Well have fun with that.
Hi nothing wrong with my pc specs I think, got a geforce 7600GS 256DDR2 card, but for some stupid reason he graphics got a spook, mixes up textures in a triangular shape, missing shapes on characters faces, and makes lots of sharp lines all over, updated drivers and all, nothing works? Am I stupid???
I agree, I have a problem with it- game keeps reverting back to 640×480 and it makes the game unplayable, I tried everything. Waste of money, seeing as no patches address this, and I cant even play the game due to 640×480 and the Fact everythings so big I cant even see the menus because they’re offscreen, heh.
I just bought the damn game a few days ago… the only thing i could do is install it. i can’t even launch the game! it always says fable has exited wrongly. then i see my desktop. i have a P4 3.0ghz, 1GB DDR RAM, ATI X300SE 128bit. i don’t know wut the hecks wrong, but i’ve done everything that microsoft’s trobleshooting page says to do. this bites!
dude right click the exe file and click run for windos 2000
Well, it hasn’t crashed or anything on me yet and I’ve beat the game once.. Tho it was kinda odd how that when I created a new character that people would just praise me about something I did in the other game… wtf??
There IS a way to save when you want to. Hit Esc, go to options, Click “Hero Save.”
It won’t save any quest progress, but it will save eprience, renoun, items, and statistics up to that point in the game, but, according to the tooltip on it, not your quest progress.
Bought it last week. Have played several hours each day. Graphics options are on high settings. Not a single problem with crashes. Audio in cutscenes gets muffled when the character is facing away from you. Other than that the game runs smoothly and is fun to play.

FIRST WERE CAN I GET A PATCH FOR IT SECONDTHE REASEN IT CRASHES IS BECAUSE YER ALL USING GARBAGE VID CARDS RADION IS A HEAT/SOFTWARE/VIBRATION SENCATIVE PEACE OF JUNK SWITCH TO NVIDIA GEFORCE I USE A FX 5200 128 DDR WITH D.O.T BUILT IN AND IT ONLY COST 30.00 THE GAME RUNES FINE EXCEPT SUBTITLES SOME TIMES FLICKER THATS WHY I WANT THE PATCH THIRD DEFRAGE HARD DRIVE AFTER INSTALL AND BEFORE PLAYING
IF PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHAT D.O.T IS ITS DINAMIC OVERCLOCKING TECHNOLIGY WITH OVERHEATING PROTECTION DOES ANY BODY KNOW IF YOU CAN HAVE CHILDREN ON THIS GAME AND HOW THE GAME IS HUGE WERE CAN I GET THE BEST ARMER IN THE GAME
There is no patch for this game
ive never had any problems with the game…it doesnt crash it doesnt freeze i dont even get lag so i dont know why ur all having problems with it ive had it for like a year and a half with no problems what so ever
NATHAN ur right i use the same video card as you
Ive never had any problems with the game. Have you checked your drivers? And just because your computer is new doesnt mean it is good. I have a custom PC and it runs everything because I have the memory and my video card is one I bought separately. What kind of computer do you have?
P.S. Nathan is obnoxious.
I can’t believe there isn’t a patch for this game…Do Lionhead / Microsoft think that they only produce 100% quality software…Crap – no such thing..!
My game plays ok, but I suddenly lose sound & have to restart it…Also it crashes when I try and quit…Other than that enjoying the game..
I have had the game since last summer and yeah it does have some issues, and no there is STILL no patches that I have found for any of the issues that have been all over the net about this game =( Some of these issues might be covered by this http://www.microsoft.com/games/fable/support.aspx the list of the supported graphics cards. And yes, NATHAN… caps are pretty much considering universally rude and obnoxious, and not going to make you heard, honestly it makes most people ignore what you are saying. If anyone happens to find a patch that I have missed… still looking after all this time, post it here or something so we can all enjoy what would be a decent game if they’d patch these bugs
I can’t even get this game to boot half the time. It will crash, I’ll lose all my progress, then it just won’t even boot. Piece of S**T if you ask me. Cant believe there is no patch. My system is 10x better than the recommended specs.
I bought this game today, and have been spending the last 2 hours trying to get it to run. I have reinstalled it twice and get the same error message. Something about C++ Visual Library runtime error. Knowing that I can’t exactly take it back to the store that I bought it at…I’m going to have to wait and see if there is going to be a patch for this game or not. If not…I got a $20.00 shelf warmer.
I’m getting this bull error message when trying to play the game and my system exceeds all the requirements. To me it seems like microsoft doesn’t know what kind of people they put in the support calling center. Some douche who has to look it up online and tells me to look online, like I wasn’t capable of that in the first place. The game is fun but not worth the effort. Screw microsoft and thier buggy ass equitment.
I love fable. I first played the original on the Xbox then got the lost chapters and then got it on PC thinking it would have extra bitS that the Xbox version didn’t (and it did sweet cheats). But luckly the only problem I have had with it is the sound which I did manage to kinda fix but altering the speaker setting on my computer also either some or none of the subtitle and writing comes up, it is a wee bit annoying but nothing it seems like some of you are getting. I have searched the web trying to find a patch with no luck, Not even the fable website was of much help 😦 but I will keep on looking.
I have no idea what Darren is talking about, i’ve installed, played and finished this game with NO CRASHES whatsoever
it runs choppy, but i haven’t noticed any minor bugs, let alone significant ones
this is by far one of the best console to PC ports i’ve ever played and if there really are bugs, i’m pretty sure MS and Lionhead studios would’ve done something about it
thing is, there aren’t enough complaints to warrant a patch, which means the bugs are probably random and one-offs
from my experience, it was a smooth game
The only problem I am having with the game is the fact that I can not always see text on screen. This makes it really hard to make the decisions in game. Anyone else having text issues?
When I first purchased and installed the game it worked fine. Then, about a week ago now, it suddenly stopped launching (when launching the program it receives a series of errors ending with “the memory referenced at could not be read” or something to that effect. The only solution I have found online is uninstall/reinstall (tried to no effect) or to delete your windows profile and create a new one (since I am only having problem with this game and nothing else… I really don’t think it is my Windows profile). Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
I found the game works well except the subtitles and most of the text either doesnt appear or only half appears. im running
2.0ghz AMD cpu
2048 ddr pc3200
512 geforce 7100GS
i have a xbox and the game crashes when it make a auto save game
yea i got fable n i tell u one fing its got a lot bugs and glitches anytime i set graphics to high during the load time it resets em to default, not only tat the saving is realy crap,
btw my comp is a 2.8 ghz, 1.5 gigs of ram has a ati radeon 9600 xt my comp can handle it so if there is a parch tell u plz
The exact same thing happens to me, have you got Radeon 9250 by any chance? Because I think it is that… I played it on my little brother’s Xbox (which used to be mine before I left my mum’s house) and I think it is one of the best games ever…
Oh yea, I forgot to say that mine crashed every about 7 minutes.
I don’t know if this helps this late in 2007, but try lowering Shadow Effect to minimum, I did, and all the crashes were gone.
This is a very old post, but I still have to say something.
If your PC was only 4 weeks old, maybe they had bad drivers, or maybe you had some heating issues.
Also, my computer that is nearing 2 years of age, with a GeForce PCIe 7600GS 256MB, P4 HT 2.8GHz, with only 1GB ram, runs Fable at max as smooth as anything.
Well… What can I say?. I have same problem as everyone: the game crashes with no error message and when I start it again a “warning” message pops up giving me the option to go to “safe mode”.
I searched all over the net to find some way to fix this… and there’s none.
I have a 1.8mhz, 512ram and 128mbs Radeon 9200.
So far I only reached the quest of scout the merchants over DarkWood… and I can’t finish it cause it crashes… so frustrating.
If anyone know a way to fix this (which I dbout) e-mail me at: hipogeo@gmail.com.
Sebastian.
after reading all the above posts, i guess i’m not the only one with a problem:
i just got that game and install it. everything works fine from teh beginning until i start the game; the screen is black but i can still hear music and actions. i checked the microsoft support web and it tells me to update my driver. i did and set the display settings appropriately. still the screen is black. maybe it’s my video card? i have a nvidia geforce go 6150 w/ 557mb shared and 1.6ghz proc and 2gb memory. any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
I just bought fable for the pc a couple days ago and since my computer is filled up with stuff i installed it on my 4gig jumpdrive. but there’s no way that i can see to play it off it. can someone please help me.
it sucks, i jst gt it for wk or so nd it jst starting to crash. me nd my sister played nd it doesn’t cransh as much 4 me bt it crashes nearly every 20mins 4 my sister. they should really gt a patch 4 TLC
ATTN: I’er POST: August 22, 2007 I’ve got an HP Pavillion that’s about 4 weeks old w/ the same nVidea grafix card. Just bought game today and had exact same problem. Lowered all video settings in game and advanced 2 sections before having same problem. Sent hatemail to HP and Microsoft, but after reading this entire post I think I’m gonna cut my $20 loss and shelf it. : )
Wow, I’ve been searching the net for a patch for this game, which I’ve never played before. Its October 1st, 2000-f*$-ing-7, and while reading these posts I’d have thought that somebody at Lionheads would have made a freaking patch. As of yet I’ve tried everything. Its been over a f%#@ing year. First post was June ’06. Just installed Guild Wars Nightfall and its online. No problems. Who at Lionhead wants to get shot?
kick ass game… if u can play it…
the game’s pretty choosy on video cards.. mines a gefore4 mx440.. whaaaaaaaa…
fable great on the console, but not on the pc, it crashes right away as its loading up for the first time. I tell ya its a waste of money.

Hi all,
After reading through all your posts a chilling realisation has dawned upon me… Most of the people experiencing crashes glitches etc. (like myself) tend to have a higher end PC than is requried by Fable. My recently upgraded PC:
AMD 4200+ Dual Core, Nvidia 7600GS 256mb, 2gb RAM
Seems to LOVE to crash all the time, where as my older PC:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+, Radeon 9250 128MB, 1GB Ram,
Seemed to have no obvious glitches…
This disturbs me, the game is by no means future proof… And is completely unstable.
I Have had the exact problems as stated crashing to desktop and I have to say that I think its an awesome game but is totally unplayable in this state and no one has any ideas on how to fix it and its sick that the game designer would not have released a patch after it being out for so long, just taking your money and after that its not their problem one guy said I buy games for entertainment not to get head aches, I couldn’t agree more
Hey I know lets all petition to have have fable taken of shelves haha do a massive recall unless lionhead decides to get off their arses and make a freaking patch
Ok, this is very aggrivating! I just bought and installed this damn game and it won’t work!
It’ll go through the whole ordeal of the opening videos. Once I click on my name to log onto my own specific character, it starts loading. But when it’s on the loading screen, it automatically closes the game then goes to desktop. I don’t get any errors, it just closes.
Here’s what is on my system:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual
Core Processor 3800+
2.00 RAM
Nvidia 7600 GT
I’m rather pissed about it. I wasted my money on a damned game I can’t play. Lionhead needs to quit putting a thumb up their arse and do something about it because frankly, I’m tired of searching for answers when there are none.
Hi, I’ve been playing Fable since its first arrival on PC.
I’ve never experienced any problems with up until i took it to a friends house to play – we have nearly identical pc’s and yet whenever we tried to run it on their pc it crashed periodically.
As far as I’ve found there is no actual reason for this happening. We did find however once we no-cd patched it the crashes became less and less frequent. Just a thought.
Same problems here too, on both computers. never even get past the intro videos before it crashes back to the desktop. No amount of playing with settings even gets me the ability to be in game.
Hey! I just got the game recently and while it doesn’t crash on me, what will happen is by the time the second level begins, I lose my graphics!
I can play all the way through until the Dad dies and you are saved, and then suddenly nothing! I know my graphics card can handle it since it handles the whole begining fine and no problems with more advanced games.
No patch online, and I can’t figure out how to fix this. If someone else has this problem and has fixed it please e-mail me
drakelb@gmail.com.
thank you
I am going crazy with the same problems. I actually love this game and have played it on X-Box. But recently have been trying to play on P.C and I am about to go insane! I started out thinking ok maybe it’s my comp.
(Although I have a great one) I contacted Dell support and told them of the error message..They confirmed it was the game and I should Re-Install. Which was bad enough well the run-time errors stopped but now my game crashes or spontaneously. Or freezes at the same point (Barow Fields) or whatever. You know during the Trader escort mission. Which we all know is the beginning of the game so I am screwed and can’t get past this point. All I can do is wonder around aimlessly like an idiot.
dear all! all this is incredible! i just started the game yesterday, it worked fine, but now simply does not restart. not even in safe mode. and – as everybody here has already noticed – there is no F&&&ing patch around. I guess we aren’t the only ones with these problems. isn’t that a reason to protest and a collaborative money back request? if you ask me, selling a not working product is a FRAUD!
you guys are lucky all i get is a blue screen when i try to start the game, have freash install of window xp pro and all drivers for hardawre upto date!!!
using a geforce 7600gs 1 gig ram soundblaster audigy zs and a p4 2.6ghz!! tried all the “solution” on microsoft site!! wasteof time! I have been playing pc games since dos was “in” never have i seen such a piece of sh1t burned onto a disc and sold as a “game”…waste of money!! and a game is something you play this you cannot play!! I hope they fall on something sharp and damage themselves!!
Yep, it crashes on a standard installation of XP corporate here too. Except, it crashes such that the computer actually powers off…
And they don’t have any sort of patches/updates available. Great game, but unless they start addressing the issues, Fable II might have some issues with a user base.
I have had this game since 2006 I have 4 computers. All of my processors are AMD and all my video cards are ATI my lowest ATI is an 9800Pro and the highest im running crossfire with 3870 The lowest processor is an Athlon 3000+ and the Highest is Athlon X2 64bit 6400+ Black edition. All of these have a min of 2gigs of ram. I have played this game with no glitches on every single one of my computers. I recently got a Q6600 Processor with an Geforce 7600GS I had laying around. For some reason on that pc it crashed like a bitch. When I transfered the 3870 into there for testing it worked just fine no freaking crashes. I’m guessing that it has something to do with NVidia. I may be wrong but when i put an ATI card in it worked just fine has anyone tested it with an 8800 thats what i’m working on purchasing right now.
Hi all!
I bought this Game today and I am so mad right now … this is a joke and I for one will contact Microsoft Customer Support tomorrow and make them some costs by using this to the fullest till it works … if not ill bring the game back to the Store …
This way either my game works or microsoft gets it sent back by the store … i just wish i could spit in the peoples face that decided not to get a patch out for this desaster … its a huge shame for Lionhead and before I buy Fable2 I will make 100% sure I read all the reviews first … if I hear a single person saying it crashed once for him I wont buy it period.
ok, this sounds crazy but the game is now PLAYABLE on my laptop!
For those of you having Vista and similar graphic card as mine(read my previous post in August), there’s a new update from nVidia. Download that update as well as an update called “Hotfix for games for Windows Vista” from Microsoft. I don’t know if this is necessary but I set my laptop to be fully performance centered, not much of graphics(you can adjust it from my computer).
Well, I hope this will help some peeps out.
Hello there!
The first time I installed the game it went just fine although I would very much like an anytime save. Now I’ve reinstaled my win xp for fixing issues and tried to play… it just crashes after the “click the left mouse button” screen… wtf is wrong with these people? don’t they know how to convert a game? I mean, aint that why they earn theyr money for???
Just like Silent Hill 2 for the PC is in bad shape…
Before you go making accusations about “not being able to save whenever you want” maybe you should open a ReadMe, or perhaps even the game manual, or even explore the options menu a bit, I’m sure you’d discover that you can in fact save whenever you want. So before you go and give a bad review to something make sure you’ve explored enough to know what you’re even talking about.
I’ve almost beat the game for about the 3rd or 4th time now. I got it for PC when it came out due to additional content and I’m just now working on my last play through and I’m nearly all the way through the game, and its only crashed once.
I installed the game on my laptop, (HP pavilion) It’s not an impressive laptop and isnt meant for gaming. My PC has 3 gigs of RAM, 512Video RAM, 2.6 dual core… you know.. pretty good for gaming…
here’s the thing, i’ve found that this laptop might actually be Jesus, because it runs all (when i say all, i mean ALL) my games better than my PC. and by better, i mean, no crashes, no wierd laggy buggy gameplay, no skipping sound… Fable works very well on this laptop, whereas.. I had probs with it on the PC.
my point? get a Jesus laptop. theyre slim little mirracles.
(If youre wondering, my laptop specs are : AMD athlon 64 x2 dual-core 1.9ghz, 2gigs ram, NVIDIA GeForce 715M/ nForce 630M… its all intergrated with the MoBo, and hell… it works great!)
Well i don’t know what your all bitchin’ about… i mean i have had it installed on older pc’s and newer pc’s and i never had any problems with it :S:S so… my guess is to turn the graphics down a notch and try again then….
im having the xact same fucking problem, right now my profile is at the arena quest and im using the save feature when i get to the fight with whisper so i can keep getting exp and after doing that 3 times it started to freeze, close out whatever, thats two profiles that have gone to waste
btw i neglected to mention that yes my computer is a top of the line custom build, and once it was finished i instantly installed Fable Lost Chapters which its more than enough to play it

I was screwwing aroung on my computer and i found out that fable was never really uninstalled. I wanted to play it but unfortunately i no longer have the disks. I need to find a fix so that i can play without a cd……….Where? HOw?
I found the patch!!
1st everyone needs to do is always install direct x even if you already have direct x 9c cos the games will have new direct x files to run the game and some direct x files are set for that one game
2nd defrag your hard drive after intallstion i use u defragger(cos windows xp one is crap it dont even consollidate or even put your reg files next to the mft)
3rd on older games alway try to have 2x the amount of ram on your gfx card
4th always install driect x on game disc’s i said it in 1st but its important or you will get errors with your game and crash if its trying to access a driect x file thats not on your pc IT WILL CRASH!!
you CAN save!
Well ‘The Shepard,’ mind telling us where you found it?
Fuck off you consoletards, you’re ruining videogames.
Had no problems with the game for 48hrs, got to the Arena quest and completed it and it just froze, lost the whole quest and journey! Now its freezin up all the time and I’m losing quests over and over again!
Nothing to do with spec, there’s some serious issues that have simply been ignored!
Also, ever since I installed the game my traffic meter has been registering a small constant amount of upload activity whenever I acces the game.
well,i’ve been digging this thing a lot,and what i found is that if you have an K-Lite Codec Pack instaled you should unistall it to get rid of the crashing to desktop at the beginning of the game when it says Press left mouse button to continue, seems it works now..but fixed a problem, found another one (pff, what a pain in the butt this is),anyway, know it keeps reverting to 640×480..got to figure this out now, damn it…anyway my spec are AMD Athlon XP 2200+, 512 RAM, ATI Radeon 9600Pro,just to make an oppinion, thou the prob aren’t from the specs..it’s just the game
ok,seems i’ve fixed the reverting resolution also,it’s all about the video options,u have to mess with them, start from a 800×600 and minimum detail at all,if it works, ingame try increasing them one by one,bit by bit,and apply to see if the game accepts it..my problem looked like it was caused by the shadow detail..hope that at least i helped some of u with my notes…all the best,cheers..
I bought this game yesterday. My computer is about 2 year old DELL XPS M1210. Mine is 1.8 DC, 2GB, with GeForce Go 7400 256 MB.
I played fine up to where Bandits come to the village. I was playing highest options at 800×600 32 bit. (I tried 1280×800 32bit but felt somewhat laggy.)
Well, I crashed, and now I can’t even start the game! Everytime I try to start the game, I get an error report. So far I really liked this game. 😦
I fixed it!
Well actually I almost messed up my computer when I followed Microsoft’s instruction to fix the problem.
I somehow was able to get into the game screen and just pressed “default” button since I didn’t want to repeat all that crashes.
The graphics are now suck, but still game holds a lot of fun. I’m a chicken chaser! (I kicked chickens just for few times, less than 10 times, and people call me chicken chaser even though I’ve beaten wasps. 😦 So I had to buy another title myself. Trying to be a good guy, too. In this game, you can basically do anything as long as you stay inside the game limit. It’s like playing GTA in fantasy RPG style!) By the way, game is a bit bloody. Even at low options I can see bloody neckless guy with tons of blood coming out from his neck. I wonder how it might look like in higher options…(I don’t want to touch the options. Higher options = crash)
ok i have a HP DV6408nr laptop, standard specs except that i have a 1G flash card boosted for extra memory (which i don’t think helps too much) GeForce Go 6150, and i am also having the ‘black screen’ issue, except i played on a friend’s laptop and got pretty far, saved the game and copied it to my laptop, i can now play it perfectly, super clear for about 10 secs then it just freezes. now obviously i am just restating everything everyone else has said, but i have found that alot of graphics cards draw their power directly from the power supply and maybe that could pose a problem? just some extra insight that someone might could look into
another thing.. when the game freezes, if i press escape, close my screen, and then re-open it, the game comes back on with the menu popped up, close the menu and i can play it for about 10 more secs. (i do not have my laptop set to go into stand-by when i close the screen, it is set to do nothing) for those of you who can play a while and then it just freezes, you might try that and perhaps be able to save it before it crashes or you have to turn it off
once again, here i am, prob talking to an out-dated forum that nobody goes too, i found that alot of people have had a problem where the game crashes, doesn’t even load all the way properly, and about 85% of them could fix it by removing a ‘Windows Blinds’ desktop theme, somehow it conflicts with the game i guess.. unfortunately that is not my problem, being that i don’t have anything relating to windows blinds. anyway, still searching; if the windows blinds thing helps anyone lemme know..
P.S. i apologize for the repetitive posts, just know that a bunch of people have probs with this game and would like answers (myself included)
good game, played the whole way through without a crash, must be your systems although with all these complaints apparently it is buggy for others. too bad.
All I can say is: “Microsoft Game studios”
This says it all.
They haven’t yet managed to get ONE good stable game to work on their own operating system. WTF?
They are purely incompetent. Don’t ever buy any Microsoft Game unless you are sure you can either tolerate all the frustration it leads to or make sure you have read for a year (at least) only good comments on it.
Some may say I’m bad to say all this, but, I might ask you to think again, and look back to all Microsoft games. All the same:
– Buggy
– Incompatible with most of the hardware components available at the release time
– And, most important, NO SUPPORT… EVER, so, I share your disappointment m8.
Right for everyone trying there hardest to play this game i havnt had any problems and the “bugs” your describing are more to do with software issues than hardware so no point listing your system spec. First thing you must all try to do is look in your graphic cards settings and make sure you have not got major memory hogging features such as anti-aliasing or anistrophic filtering switched on, set all these to app controlled. Secondly disable all shadows it makes a huge performance difference on any platform. Thirdly ensure that you have cheaked any tasks running in the back ground are not using too much memory if they are then more than likely anyone with a gig or less will have to increase the size of there windows page file. Also anyone who has updated there video card drivers you must bare in mind that this game was brought out in 2005, there for any drivers that will have been released anabling support for siome of the features will have been released then too, you may find that you may actually need to down grade your video drivers. (but i wouldn’t reccommend it). And anyone who is overclocking your graphics card i would stop it this may allow your memory and core clock speeds to run faster but it can still cause major artifacts in games, best thing to do is either upgrade or turn off you overclocked settings and put them back to there defaults.
Right, the 800 and 900 in the 7, 8, and 9 series cards are made with gaming in mind. Something like a 7600GS or GT will not be optimal for gaming. Even one such as Fable with its very low system requirements. I have a 7900 GS and I haven’t had one single solitary crash and I’ve been playing it for 2 days straight.
Bottom line: It’s the hardware not the software. Keep in mind, I’m not saying it’s bug free but all this talk about it crashing to the desktop repeatedly shows that it’s a hardware problem. If it were the game, I’d be having the same issue. I’m not.
ok here’s the deal. for all those who say ‘it’s the hardware, not a software’ how come some people can play it on a particular type of computer, where others can’t with the exact same computer? (myself included personally) it has to be a software compatibility with something running or a driver somewhere or something.
Same problem here as stated a couple million times before. I’ve had Fable:TLC for several years, installed it on a old computer I shared with my brother. Got a very, very nice PC set-up now and I decided to install it on this machine… Load it up, made a char, finished the kid part (get 3 gold and all that) and than it shuts down, right when the scene with Maze starts. So, I restart the game, shuts down when I get onto my char
yep, random crashes.
system: 8800gts 640mb
4gb ram
AMD DualCore 4600
WinXP SP2
maybe you need a really old and crappy system for this really old and crappy software to run properly?
Wow..so many people having trouble with this game :O
Ive never had trouble, either on my super gaming computer or my horrible laptop. Ive found it is a very durable game, not even crashing when my laptop shut down after running low on power.
It seems that the ‘Hero save’ causes problems. I used it 10 or so times to get free keys and afterwards almost every normal or auto save caused the game to crash. I didn’t have any problems before that.
I have this game in my laptop and never had a problem, then last week I upgraded my PC’s VC to HD 3850 and installed the game to test the new VC and transferred my save game to the PC, the game starts fine and plays fine anywhere in the game, but when I go to heroes guild and upgrade skills, the game crashes to the desktop. I already tried installing it again but the same problem happens.
Intel E6300 C2D
2GB ddr667
Palit Radeon HD3850
WinXP SP2
i installed the game and all i got was abug i open the game and when its about to start the computer restarts its driven me insane and ther is no patch and the problem is that i heard that its a good game and i wasted my money for nothing
i have the same probelm…
crashs… all the time
if someone finds away to fix it PLEASE
email me
lilfarvacola@yahoo.com
I managed to get through the game once. Then i decided to make a new character but after i finished training the blasted character EVERY TIME I go to a new map (Lookout to Greatwood for instance)it crashes to the desktop! So I downloaded to SafeDisk thing (its not quite a patch but its the same idea) microsoft made for its games, reinstalled the game and lowered the resolution a smidgen. That seemed to do it for about an hour but as soon as the autosave came at the end of the escort through darkwood quest it blew AGAIN!
Long story short, try:
– Download the SafeDisk Patch from Microsoft
– Reinstall Fable TLC
– and reduce the resolution (in video options)
– PRAY!
If that doesn’t help i don’t know what to tell you.
I don’t know what he’s whining about. The game is not buggy, it’s probably just the copy(ies) he bought. The same thing happened to me with Iron Storm. I bought 10 different copies, all from the same store, and they were all glitchy. I’m sure it was just from the batch they were shipped with. On another note, just because his pc was apparently a “latest model”, doesn’t mean that all the parts are compatible with the game. Again, I have a top of the line model, and I tried playing Resident Evil 4, but the game does not support DirectX 10, which is what I have. Just because it doesn’t work for you doesn’t mean you should just go out and brand it as “defective”.
Oh yeah, on a further note to my previous post, I have Fable:TLC, and have installed it on five machines, including a laptop with a 700MhZ Single-core Processor, 256 Ram, 40 Gig hard drive, and a simple integrated Intel Graphics chipset and it works perfectly with no glitches, graphical flaws, or lag. No problems with my new desktop either, and that has 8 gigs of Ram, 700 GB hard drive, Soundblaster X-fi Fatality Professional Gamer’s Edition sound card, Nvidia Geforce GTX 260 896MB graphics card, and AMD Quad Core Processor running 2.2 GhZ each. Again, no problems. If at first you don’t succeed, man, trade for another copy.
I think I’ve found the source of the problem and the solution!
The problem seams to be with K-Lite codec pack (and probably with other packs to, suck as FF-show)
I had to uninstall K-lite and reinstall Fable-TLC, I’msorry to say that my profile.bin was corrupt so I had to start over.
Read this:

This game worked perfectly for me,
P4 HT 3.0HGHZ
GeForce 7300GT 512MB/PCIE
DDR2 (667) 2GB 1024×2
300GB SATA Drive
No problems what so ever.
This game is incredibly buggy, Graphics wise.
For the most part I’ve noticed areas where I crash (Witchwood and beyond) have been due to graphics, coming up with ntdll.dll errors, when infact there is nothing wrong with my ntdll.dll and it is up to date.
My advice for anyone playing the game on high end graphics/sound cards, is around those areas, lower all graphics detail (In game or via Rivatuner for Nvidia users) and turn the sound in game off.
This is a beautiful game, unfortunately the compatability for good systems, well, absolutely sucks, which is astounding considering nearly every other game out there is compatible with the base specs and is built with upgrades in mind.
But hey, what can we expect from the man who proclaimed his latest OS was a piece of shit after it’s release. Good Job Microsoft. *spit*
I have it. Played it for 13hours all together. has not crashed once and havent seen any bugs at all. so dont kno whats wrong with your versions.
Me neither, but I also have two other things to say:
Fable 2 for comp! (soon, plz!)
and .isos rule
YOOOOOOO BOIIIIII ❤

Wel’l I’m of’f O’w Chum’p! Grat’z Agai’n!!1! (Gratz: a shorthand version of Congratulations, often shortened to grtz, gtz, or even gz (The last one there is for pros, so if you wana be pro then use gz.)
No one picked up on the surprising rate of AMD-based systems? Go download yourself a copy of AMD Power Monitor and change the power settings. Most are set to an Energy Star setting by default – you save power and AMD adjusts as you demand more. Also, fix broken codecs and get rid of ffdshow’s control of the audio. This is easily done in the configurator – newer versions take care of this for you. I have NEVER had a crash on Fable. (Oblivion is quite a different story, but I’m working through it with NVidia’s particle correction mod). If all else fails at this point with Fable, defrag, clean your registry, and go buy another game for $5.
Seems I have the opposite experience to you guys. I got Fable TLC for my xbox 360 (xbox1 game backwards compatible), and it crashes a lot, and when it crashes the entire xbox360 hangs requiring a power cycle. In addition its evident the xbox has nowhere near enough hardware oomph as a gaming pc, I got a 2nd hand copy of the pc game 2 days ago and have been playing it since. Its not crashed once, the game is smooth, no jerkyness even in oakvale and I got it on max details and max resolution, gfx card is a 8800GT. Loading times are far superior also, the loading screen isnt even on for one second between areas whilst on the xbox360 it takes 5-10 seconds between areas. The only complaint I got with the PC version is there is no native gamepad support, considering logitech and other vendors make gamepads for the PC I am somewhat baffled, but thankfully I have managed to get it running on a gamepad and its almost the same controls as on the xbox now.
I agree with you Chris, a PC has much more processing power and is far more superior than an xbox360.
However i am encountering the same as everyone in this chat. The game loads up fine but once i go to play it, it usually freezes and the colours distort and go black, yellow, green etc. then i am forced to exit it …sometimes i can escape by using ctrl+alt+delete, but usually i have to reboot my PC manually which is a pain. When my computer is reloaded i try to play the game again and it comes up with safe mode or normal mode. I pick safe mode but it doesn’t change a thing -.-
I’m getting really pissed off because all i want to do is play a game that i payed good money for. I meet the recommended requirements by far, i have a 2ghz processor,2gDDR3ram and a NVIDIA 9500GT 1gram graphics card.
I wish Microsoft would get their rear in gear and get us a patch that can fix these bugs once and for all.
Fingers crossed people.
I believe our computing hardware is to advance for Fable-TLC as it is a fairly old game -.-
I continued research into these issues as I have had no trouble and discovered many programming errors exist within the load sequence. One way to fix this is to use a no-cd crack which bypasses the issues. You can go to gamecopyworld.com and pick yourself up one that works just fine. I like
I just purchased Fable: TLC and am having some problems. After spending hours delving into the gameplay, letting the autosave do its thing, I did a manual save, and quit to the main menu. Today, I booted up the game and loaded my manual save. It loaded, hiccupped, and then showed the autosave screen. Next thing I know, the game loads up the scene of the character vomiting…still as a child, something I had gotten wayyyyyyy past before. Same thing happened when I loaded the autosave, even though (I assume) it saved throughout the training process and at least when I graduated from Hero school. I looked at what the saves say: their time is right, and both give my location as “Lookout Point.” Does anyone have any ideas?
I believe world saves only save exp status and not quest status. I to have had the same experience.
But since your auto save didn’t work then there’s something wrong. I suggest reinstalling the game again. If it persists then do tell 😀
Just to let you all know, the problem is not with your computers, or which graphics card you use, or your sound card.
I have a phase change cooled dual quad core (8 x 2.66) workstation with 64 gb FB-DDR2-667 memory; 4 x 500gb sas drives in raid 5; a Quadro 5800 (4gb); a MOTU HD192 for sound i/o; and a tesla C1060(4gb) computing processor.
Sustained performance of 1.1 TF
Sustained read/write of 1.56 gb/s
Still can’t play this game past the loading screen.
I’m hoping someone can figure out the problem, although mine may be slightly different.
Loading a saved game, it freezes at about 1/3 the way in. I can bring it out of the freeze with ctrl-alt-del, (just pushing them makes the game start running again), and it loads. Problem is that after that it is stuck at the lowest graphics setting.
The menus all disappear off the bottom right corner of the screen, so I can’t fix them.
Going to the main menu then reloading causes the same freeze again, but I can load a saved game file from the pause menu.
I’m running Vista 64bit home premium
with 4 gigs of DDR2 and nvidia geforce9800m gs card with 512 dedicated video memory, so the specs of my computer shouldn’t be the problem.
I’ve also tried running it in compatibility mode, no luck.
Go visit gamecopyworld.com and download the no-cd crack for Fable. The load sequence is the problem. The protection on the disc is faulty.
Ha! my game works about the same. It wont let me face one or two directions in one place or another or it freezes and then continues playing without video. Right now i’v been on this game for a month trying to kill TwoBlade
Hi:I just bought fable the lost chapters from EB games, and it started crashing this morning, cannot find a patch, which i thought there would be.So im reinstalling the game. And if that dont work, well back it goes to the store.Very upset.
People, the game is freezing due to the loading sequence on the disc – it calls out for disc protection and then fails. If you download and run the no-cd crack, the game will work just fine – this includes saved games that are now freezing. Your system components are not the problem (unless they don’t meet the minimum requirements). I had every problem mentioned in this thread and I used the crack and no more problems. It was that simple. I am NOT a member / rep / whatever for gamecopyworld.com, but if you want to play the game and are having issues, this WILL solve your problems.
wow, I’ve played this game about 8 times thru, with only a minor hiccup (once I complete the game, every profile or character in the game is greeted as though they did the dead…) maybe for once, my ancient system is actually a good thing….. (my system is about 10 yo, running 2.3Ghz Athlon with only 1Gb ram on XP)
I just bought the game a week ago and right away it started freezing and then crash during game play. Very frustrating as it’s obvious that from the beginning of this thread which started in 2006 up until now 2009,that there is not going to be any patch that will help any of us out anytime soon. Does anyone know where to download this no-cd crack?
Fable played flawlessly on win 2000 for me but when I upgraded to win XP Pro I have had nothing but problems with it.
Heh, 3 1/2 years and still the comments keep coming 🙂
Yeah, but the guy’s such an idiot, and so are many of these other guys. If a new game crashes, it’s probably not the game xD
now is it not agenst the law to sale a product that 99% of people who buy it dont have the old pc to run it, its a scam, you buy there game, and it is not able to run on any modern computer, i dont know of any program you buy off the shelf and is so out dated it wont work on new computers, and when there is such software it has a patch on the cd to make it work or on there web site. if thay dont want to maintain it then dont sale it, i bought a copy about a week ago at gamestop and the box says my system is perfict for the game and it still dose not work same proploms as evrey one else, agin is there some law out there about this, just the fact the system requarments on the box match my system and it dose not work, no patch or anything its a scam and i dont plan on ever buying another prodect with lionhead on it, its like if microsoft were to sale ms-dos 5.0 and put compatible with an intel P4 computer or any other modern computer. somthing should be done ether force them to make a patch or take the product of the shelf.
ok, i dnt care obout how everyone is complaining about how it crashes…. i know it crashes -_-
what i’d like to know is WHAT PATCH IS THERE AVAILABLE to get it to stop crashing!?!?
i had this game before and lost it. this one is completly new and it crashes like *****!!! Help Please!
Okay, there is obviously something wrong with your computer. The game can be a bit requiring, but if all the critics loved it they were obviously able to play it; and hopefuly with good graphics.
I can’t tell you what is wrong, though perhaps it’s simply because you’ve not downloaded some patches for a graphic card or something else; how should I know, with your lacking description of the problem?
Really, try it on another computer or two, and then reconsider what it is you’re saying.
Also, the age of a computer doesn’t mean it should be good, and patches for drivers can come at any time really, so let’s be honest; you’re being a b*tch.
-Louis
I agree with louis i never had problem with it crashing unless it was on one of my older and much crappier computers, just because its a new this year computer, doesnt mean shit unless it has the specs to back it up
Its all about your graphics card, period. I had played this originally on PC when it came out and had no problem. I was using a pretty weak desktop that had a good upgraded graphics card. When I tried it again with a top of the line 2007 Toshiba laptop, it didnt work worth crap. Know why? Toshibas play off the chipset as do most laptops. In the race to make laptops weigh nothing, graphics are given up. In fact, I challenge you to find a decent laptop with good video drivers.
Now I got my new HP desktop with a NVidia GTX 260 and all is fine again.
I got a laptop with a decent graphics card, a sony viao pcs. got it off of best buy. it only has intel media accelarator hd for a graphics card. it can run l4d2 on high with pretty decent frame rates and so too does fable, also runs cod4 on med-low quality.
Never had the game crash on me, ever. 2.4GHz P4 with 1GB RAM and a Nvidia 5600 running WinXP. I bet other games frequently crash too on your pc’sas well. Check your anitvirus and such too. Only problem i have is in one town the blacksmith doesn’t spawn. Other than that, it’s a great game and the fighting involves skill, not just clicking on something until it’s dead. Just take the time to get used to the controls. Beautiful scenery too.
never had a crash on my old pc what was a OS XP SP3, CPU AMD Sempron @~1.75GHz, GPU 7600GT 512MB(had to turn down shadows, though could play Crysis on almost high) and 1.75GB RAM. And now I’m gonna play it again third times the charge on my OS XP SP3, CPU Q9300 @2.5GHz, GPU GTS 250 1GB and 4GB RAM.
sorry to say that but there no bug for me so there 4 possibilities
1: you lie to get your money back because you dont like the game
2: you got virus
3: your computer is not enough powerful
4: the patch you downloaded wasnt released by microsoft
oh i forgot youre game can also be used because on a cheap laptop (450$) its work perfect for me
i forgothen again i think its better without patch
(for me its good)
ive had the game now since 2008, and its never crashed. i have a low-spec computer setup (1.7ghz pentium 4, 700+mb ram, nvidia 5500 vga, built in soundcard) and the game has never crashed, looks awesome, but the video card/processor does not seem to handle the best shadow effects. other than that its pretty smooth, no sound/graphic errors, no crashing. i scimmed the previous posts, and no one said vista or whatever but ive allways had xp pro. no probs here. maybe its your operating system.
I’ve noticed that a lot of people here have AMD systems. Although I’ve never had any issues with Fable… I have had issues in other games and the AMD Dual Core Optimizer update and Dual Core Driver has helped fix any issues I’ve had in other games. Think it only makes big difference on XP.
My system:
AMD 4800 + X2
ASUS GeForce 7600GT
Abit AN8 Ultra Motherboard + On board sound
3GB DDR400
I’ve run the game on XP SP2 and currently I’m playing it on Win7. The first thing I did was set the compatibility for the game to XP SP3 and set it to run as Administrator. Have been playing fine on Win7 for 2 days now.
Hopefully some of this might be helpful to some. If the Dual Core Optimizer and Dual core driver worked, please post here to let people know.
FABLE IS DA BEST!!!IT IS GOOD ON MY COMPUTER!!!IM PROUD OF THE COMPANY!!!WOOO!!!GO LIONHEAD:D
Get a no-cd, and update your computers, you need to download a lot of updates.
I know what I’m talking about. I’ve worked with computers forever, and I’m a programmer.
It’s like this, Windows is a spiderweb of utility functions, for instance, you have functions for writing files, functions for creating messageboxes, etc,. (There are hundreds of libraries. DLL\LIB\Etc)
If a game calls one lib function, it may call another library, and so on, and so on.. If all your libs don’t match up(ie, not the correct version), you will have CTD’s, etc,..
Basically, say, you have v1.0 of a library, and the game calls for v2.0, well, the function the game called probably doesn’t exist. Calling non-existent functions = bad. (And Windows is nothing but thousands of libs interacting.)
Get it? You have to update everything, drivers, C++ runtimes, .Net Framework, run MS update, get everything matching.
This won’t solve everything, there are hardware specific issues, things like multi-core issues, etc, but this will greatly reduce your problems. (Also, clean your PC’s, both physically(vacuum inside it carefully PC OFF), and with tools like, CCleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy, Antivirus software, etc,.)
Was worried about post limits. 🙂
Another thing to note, buy good hardware.
DO NOT SKIMP ON THESE PARTS!
1. Memory (Very important to stability\performance.)
2. Power Supply Unit (This is a major cause of issues for people, store bought PC’s usually come with JUNK PSU’s.)
3. Motherboards can also play a big role in overall system stability. Get a good one..
For PSU’s, Antec has been a good brand, make sure you get a high enough wattage PSU for your system.
OCZ makes some good memory, I’m running 2gb of some of there mid-grade stuff. (Their HQ stuff is for high-end gaming, overclocking, etc, but still, if you have the money, go for it, not much more expensive.)
Motherboards, ASUS is pretty good, or their cheaper counterpart Asrock, I haven’t really tried any other brands, I’ve been on the same Asrock board for about 5-7 years, I forget, very solid board.
Follow all that advice, and you should be good, and have very few issues.
I would avoid Vista, and I had trouble with Win7, but I hear good things about it, I recommend XP\XP64, but it’s up to you. (Only get XP64 if you are tech savvy, it has issues, mainly a lack of support, so you have to know your way around a PC to make some stuff work.)
Good luck. 🙂
I play Fable TLC on this computer (!)
Pentium III 666 MHz
256 mb RDRAM
Geforce 5500 FX 256 MB
Windows XP of course.
I had one crash. ONLY ONE. I’m at the end of the game now.
One of the best games I ever played.
Was not buggy for me…
You can’t miss this game… ONE OF THE BEST.
Okay, this is fucking ridiculous. I’m running Fable on a fucking little dinky shit laptop, and you’re telling me that Fable is going to start crashing on me? It has once, and I didn’t find a patch. If this doesn’t get fixed, I’m going to demand Microsoft to give my money back for making an unplayable game!
i played this game 2yrs ago and i got Windovs 7!i can’t play this gameeee
Yeah I have crashes all the time… Always at the same places, no matter how many times i reinstall it…
If I do, it just starts to crash at another place… quite odd 🙂
Tried to defrag HD & registry, remove skinz frm XP, original user32.dll etc. nothing worx… I`ll just try 2 set the pagefile a bit higher (but I don`t think that would work)
Comp. Spec. SP3
1G RAM
Pentium D Dual Core 2x3GHz
ATI X800GT 256MB
still no patches found (12/2010), none expected :((
Leuke site!.
Groetjes Barbara
This game has to be the biggest rip off ever. Bought this game about 3 1/2 years ago and I’ve gone through 4 different computers and I couldn’t get the game to even load once. The second disc will not load. For the person here who said use gamecopyworld well that is all well and good for you but I could not understand a single thing on that site! I LIVE IN HOPE SOMEDAY SOMEWAY i MIGHT GET TO PLAY THIS GAME!
ummm I don’t know what you guys are talking about… I’m playing fable without any problems. Just yesterday I’ve played through 9 hours without one single crash, freeze or anything…
I really didn’t have any problems with fable 0.o
config: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+
2GB DDR2
nVidia 6100 nforce 405 (integrated gpu!!!)
Really, not a single problem – not one. 🙂
