It’s Time to Reintroduce Super Socco

James and I attended a very exciting Whitecaps game this evening–the home team equalized in extra time. While watching the game, the subject of Super Socco came up.

For those of the wrong age or geography, Super Socco was a drink box of the eighties. I mentioned it previously, and Andrea offered a great description in the comments:

Super Socco was one of the first drink boxes. It came from Dairyland. It tasted a bit like Gatorade. There were three flavours: regular, grape and orange. Super Socco sponsored youth soccer and other sports programs. The Whitecaps were a hot team at the time, and I’m sure that was part of the message–a soccer sports drink.

Kids dug it, but I’m pretty sure it tasted awful. I also was surprised to learn that James drank Super Socco in Winnipeg. Apparently it was branded with BC sports teams, but was sold elsewhere.

Regardless, now is the time for Dairyland to reintroduce Super Socco, with a suitably nostalgic or ironic marketing campaign. The Super Socco drinking kids of the eighties are today’s parents of young children. I think it’d be the perfect time to kick it Socco-style all over again.

  1. I used to have a Super Socco every single day in my lunch. My mum would freeze them overnight so that by the time lunchtime came around they were slushy and delish. I didn’t realize it was a Dairlyland product. I guess that’s why folks in the States look at me blanky when I mention it.

  2. If I recall correctly … “Move over pop, the taste you ain’t got. Super Socco. S O C C O.”

They used to have the Whitecaps players pitch it, didn’t they. Man, how long ago was that. Mid-Eighties?

  3. Wow! I had totally forgotten about super succo. I can hear the jingle in my head even now…… Sadly I don’t think I ever sampled one. We were stuck with fresh squeezed orange juice in those days, darn it!

  4. If we’re bringing back nostalgic drinks, my vote is for Kool-Aid to reintroduce “Sharkelberry Finn”. Unlike any other real-life beverage in flavour, it also provided the colour for my first foray into hair dye (scary garish pink).

  5. hmmm…I always thought it was “rockeberry koolaid” that was used for hair dye…..is it true that the only thing that will take it out is head & shoulders shampoo?

  6. Super Socco was great! Of course the regular flavour was just water and citric acid…but damn if that wasn’t some great tasting citric acid!

  7. Well, I was raised on Super Socco and Wagon Wheels. Carrying my paper lunch bag to school with my wagon wheel, Super Socco and orange or apple which actually squished into my sandwhich making that lovely indent causing the grape jelly to ooze through the white wonderbread. Oh the days gone by. It was sad when Super socco wound down, but thank Buddah for good ole Country Time Lemonade. That is what got me through grades 6-7. But nothing will ever replace my regular flavored Super socco.

Hey was it only Dean Beliveau at my elementary shchool or a wives tale he caught wind of? He told me in 2nd grade that if you found a colored bullseye on the bottom of your super socco tetrapak you got a free one?

    Bless Barefoot for this webring!!!

  8. are they ever gonna bring super socco out again, and where do we go or who do we contact to see if we could get if back on the market again?

  9. Super Socco

I remember this! It was the official (sports) drink of the Whitecaps… It had a sort of citrus flavour if I remember right…I used to get in in my lunch sometimes …grade 5….yeah, cool.

  10. SUPER SOCCO WAS THE SH**! I LOVED TO MIX IT WITH GIN I AM ON THE CHAT LINE RIGHT NOW AND I WAS THE ON ELECTED TO SEE IF WE COULD FIND THAT PUNCH SOCCO ANYWHERE!

  11. We drank super socco in compton calif. during my teenage years in the eighties. We had a citrus flavor, orange, and fruit punch. It taste so much better than gatorade with the same benefits. BRING IT BACK, PLEASE!!!!!

  12. yea supper socco use to go down on hot 80’s sumthing summer days with ease, the oddly shaped bottle and soccer ball cap made it that more hip,(or hippie) we use to make odd souding poping noise with the cap after gulping it all down..Original was the best…

  13. I want to know if anyone used it to stop diarrhea in their kids. FHP health plan told me to use it for my kids and it worked every single time. I was disheartened when they stop selling it.

  14. In southern California, I remember a friend and I used to go to our little jot-em-down store and pick up cool-ass glass bottles of super socco. It had a soccer ball cap on it! I believe it was the late 70’s and even gatorade was new. They had the green and then the orange and Socco was whiteish colored and tasted a bit like lemonade. And yes, my mom used it to cure the runs! It had the same stuff in it pepto had… magnesium I think.

  15. Ah, Super Socco…. my old childhood friend / nemesis.

I remember loving these when they first came out but after having them day after day for lunch I grew to hate the acidic taste (regular was the worst). I would give them another go if I saw them in stores today…

  16. I just the other day told some of my friends here in North Carolina about Super Socco. Years ago, I got really hammered at the Firefly Lounge in Hollywood, drank two Supers in the AM. My hangover disappeared. I was amazed! I would love to see it come to my area of geography.
