As Richard, Andy and Boing Boing report, tomorrow is towel day (and the related Wikipedia entry). Carry a towel to celebrate the life and work of Douglas Adams, who left us much too soon. This is my favourite quote about towels from the fourth book in Adams’s, uh, trilogy:
He sat on a step, took from his satchel a bottle of that Ol’ Janx Spirit and a towel. He opened the bottle and wiped the top of it with the towel, which had the opposite effect to the one intended, in that the Ol’ Janx Spirit instantly killed off millions of the germs which had been slowly building up quite a complex and enlightened civilization on the smellier patches of the towel.
If you’re too ashamed to carry a towel, you could donate to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Save The Rhino International, two of Adams’s favourite charities.
UPDATE: This got rendered private by WordPress for some reason. It’s a little late now, but I am carrying a towel today.
I loved the Hitchhiker’s series. Too bad the movies (esp. the new one)were such a letdown.
