The Other Guy Responds

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard the amusing story of Guy Goma, the Congolese cab driver ‘wrongly identified in the press as a cab driver’ who the BBC mistook for Guy Kewney, a wireless pundit. If not, you can watch the video clip, read the article and get up to speed.

Today I happened upon Guy Kewney’s blog. He offers his perspective on being the right Guy at the wrong time:

But the guy on screen – sorry, the “Guy Kewney” live, on screen, definitely was. Black. Also, he spoke with a French-sounding accent, and he seemed as baffled as I felt. At first, he seemed puzzled that anybody might imagine that the lawsuit had consequences, and suggested that people would still be able to download music from Internet cafes. But what about Apple? “I don’t know. I’m not at all sure what I’m doing here,” he admitted sadly, as they finally twigged that something was going badly wrong, and hustled him off the set.

Mr. Kewney sounds a little bitter. Plus, he’s getting skewered on the discussion board associated with his post.

  1. Could you link to Guy Kewney’s blog post? The discussion board doesn’t link to it.

  2. I laughed, and laughed, and laughed when I saw the BBC backpedal the other day.

But seriously, it’s not a big deal… and I think people in the media are totally overreacting to a stupid mistake the BBC made. Hell, it could have been a lot worse! Some producer could have shuffled a janitor on the set and called him the ambassador to Romania or something.

Too funny. It’s happened before, and it’ll happen again.
