24 Days to the World Cup

Who should I cheer for? Sadly, Canada may never qualify for the World Cup (again), so they’re out. I’d have cheered for Ireland, if they had made it.

I’d like to pick a team that has a decent chance of advancing out of the first stage. I’m leaning towards France, who should be out to redeem themselves after a poor showing in 2002. I happened to be in France during that World Cup–that was one sad country.

  1. I am half-Argentine. Therefore, I recommend you cheer for anyone outside Argentina’s group. Except Brazil.

  2. Darren: Would you cheer for the USA Or would they be the last team you’d cheer for?

  3. Bobby: I’m pretty apathetic about the USA, for a couple of reasons:

    a) Relatively few people in the USA (and Canada, I should add) care about soccer. So, if they were to win, it wouldn’t be the national holiday it is in nearly every other country.

    b) After Donovan, Friedel and Adu, I know very few players on the US team. I think a lot of them play in the US, and I really only watch European football–mostly the EPL.

Also, they’re rivals (well, Goliath to our David) to Canada, so I guess that’s a better reason not to cheer for them.

  4. Italy are always a good bet if you don’t mind petulent fouls. I respect them a lot though for picking a squad made up entirely of players from the Italian leagues, that means no players like Cassano have made the line up.

Failing that, my outside bet for a good run are Ghana, they’re all pretty big tough players so I wouldn’t bet on them making like Senegal did in the last WC.

Don’t expect much of France they’re in pretty grim dissaray at the moment sending a lot of players on their last legs to this tournament. They coaxed 3 or 4 players out of international retirement just to qualify

  5. Well if I wasn’t going to support England for reasons of, uh, birthiness, then I’d think about the Ivory Coast. They came second in the African Nations Cup with a young team. Toure and Eboue will also have Champions League Final experience (Go Arsenal! by the way) by then. They could surprise a few teams.

  6. You know, you guys are making a strong case for supporting an African nation. They’re not going to win, but, being a Canucks fan, I’m used to disappointment. I’m going to read a couple of preview articles to see who has the best chance.
