Ireland is a prudish country. For all the talk down at the pub, you’d rarely hear conversations about sex. I don’t think I ever saw a prostitute on the street, and there were no visible strip bars (though apparently there were a few concealed ones). When 94% of the country is Catholic, this isn’t surprising.
Since 2004, Ireland has seen a huge influx of foreign workers:
Much of the influx has occurred since May 2004, when Poland and nine other countries, mainly from the former Soviet bloc, were admitted to the European Union. Fearing a flood of cheap labor from the east, most of the original EU members imposed restrictions. Only Ireland, Britain and Sweden kept their doors open.
They’ve come from Poland and Latvia and Lithuania to do jobs that the Irish people don’t want to, and now comprise 8% of the workforce. In shops around Dublin these days, you can buy a Polish newspaper. New world order, indeed.
As Gridskipper reports, some of these new workers are employed in the sex trade, servicing both the new immigrants and the locals.
Hundreds of stunningly beautiful women from Eastern Europe have decided it is safer and better to live and work in Dublin, where they can be legally resident rather than risk being “trafficked” somewhere else. These women consider being “legal” migrants better than risking criminal traffickers taking them somewhere were they can be easily abused and exploited due to “illegal” immigrant status. Therefore, Dublin is attracting some of the best and most affordable women in Europe.
Eep, that phrasing’s a little callous, isn’t it? Regardless, it’s an interesting phenomenon. Later this month I’m heading to an Irish wedding, so I’m sure I’ll get an earful about foreign workers of all sorts.
There’s loads of strip clubs in Ireland well Dublin anyway, I pass four everyday. Stringfellows, Angles, Eden Garden and that that other one in Temple Bar. Also I ‘m always talking about sex with my mates, we don’t go into technique and stuff but we’re far from prudish.
Well I think Irish people should wake up and realise what is happening in the sex market. I am African, and most Irish men will come for Africans and negotiate for sex at a price because they assume Africans are assylum seekers and need money and will do anything for it.So prostitues nowadays do not need to parade the streets, the men come searching. HIV is spreading like wild fire in Ireland now.. so becareful!
