A few months ago, I noticed something super-cool in my neighbourhood. Just around the corner from my apartment, at 1181 Seymour Street (near Davie), they’re putting the finishing touches on the Vancouver International Film Centre:
The Vancouver International Film Centre and Vancity Theatre will be an exciting new centre of excellence for Vancouver’s film lovers, both for filmmakers and for cinephiles. It will marry the art of film with emerging new technologies and will allow the Greater Vancouver International Film Festival Society to broaden its public, cultural and educational mandate.
It features a 175-seat theatre, as well as a pretty fancy looking atrium. I think I know where I’m holding my next birthday party. I called to enquire about rental rates, but they were all in a twitter, being in the midst of moving in. I’ll call again next week.
This facility exists because condo builders can win certain benefits (a couple of extra floors, for example) by including cultural spaces in their new buildings. This scheme was also behind the Contemporary Art Gallery on Richards Street.
Thanks for reminding me… had to go check out media acreditation for the festival.
Let’s see if they let bloggers in…
The Contemporary Art Gallery is very contemporary. Post-contemporary, even.
