I haven’t seen this in the mainstream media yet, but my brother passed on this news from the Voyageurs (the fan club of the Canadian national soccer team) message board:
Vancouver Whitecaps FC owner Greg Kerfoot has completed the purchase of waterfront property for a new 30,000 seat stadium!!!
This news comes to us via sources at Intrawest, who advise that Kerfoot has made the purchase and is already tendering the building contract.
This would coincide with additional info received this week from Vancouver councillor Jim Green, who said the Whitecaps had presented a full business proposal to city planners for a site on Coal Harbour (which is precisely where the site touted by the Intrawest sources is).
I’ve got no way (or time) to verify this rumour, but apparently the proposed site is just north of the rail yards.
UPDATE: Not to be bitchy, but this guy’s claim of exclusivity is silly. He clearly just read the news where I did–a soccer bulletin board.
Cool! The more soccer stadiums and other sporting-type facilities they put along Coal Harbour, the less chance of them putting in a marina alongside. I’m so damn sick of power boats and yachts in Coal Harbour.
