As you may have read this morning, Windows Vista is the official name of the new Windows operating system, codenamed Longhorn (named after a bar in Whistler). According to Slashdot, Vista means ‘chicken’ in Latvian. I’m not sure what to do with that information, but there you are.
It’s a tricky marketing problem. Half the world is going to hate whichever name you choose. I’m slightly dismayed, because for the next 5 to 7 years I’m going to hear a lot of “man, my Windows Vista installation really crapped out” or “I truly love my Windows Vista pants-cataloguing utility”. I’m a big advocate of the whole [OS] + [version number or year]. That would also save the Microsoft marketing department the 217 hours they spent going:
Marketing Dude: Er…how about ‘Windows Seascape’?
Marketing Dudette: ‘Windows Frontier’?
Dude: ‘Windows Open Road’?
Dudette: ‘Windows Back Alley’?
Dude: ‘Windows Porte-cochere’?
Dudette: ‘Windows Backstreet Boys’?
I always liked the code names for Windows, which I usually preferred over the final version name. Whistler and Blackcomb are among the code names used.
Since they are based in Redmond WA, perhaps it would be a nice gesture to name it after other parts of Washington State ?
e.g. Humptulips
or perhaps Klickitat ?
My favourite though, has to be Wallula.
