1.58 DVDs Per Week

Heather watches a lot of movies. 87 of them in 55 weeks, courtesy of the Canadian Netflix clone, VHQ Online. She’s got a complete list on her site and, excepting The Singing Detective, she’s got good taste.

This reminded me of one of my favourite Web 2.0-get on the Cluetrain-listen to the conversation stories: Zip.ca. I often discuss when I give talks, because it’s a glowing example of what happens when you ignore the online conversation. Check out Boris’s Google ranking, and then the tone of the postings to his site. Interestingly, the recent postings are generally positive–either Zip.ca has shaped up, or they’re spamming his site with positive feedback (hey Boris, do those comments come from different IP addresses?). If you check out slide #12 of this slide set, you’ll see some initial, nasty feedback.

  1. I think they’ve shaped up, although some of those posts do seem a bit suspicious.

    Actually, a lot of the happy people are either in Ottawa or Toronto mainly: since Zip is based in Ottawa, one would expect delivery to be fairly easy to those places.

  2. So vhq.com is treating her right eh…

    I have been thinking about checking one of these services out….might have to try vhq

  3. one of the reasons vhq has been good for me is that they have a location/depot in coquitlam, so i don’t have to deal with dvds coming from or going to ontario (which is just dumb).

  4. you ask for movie in order to form an opinion;

    i would not have bothered with ‘the last samuria’, ‘kill bill, 1 or 2’, ‘pearl harbour’, or some of the others down the list, but i’m curious why you would pick out ‘singing detective’ as poor taste.

    i saw an episode or two on tv and i’ve wondered what happened for a long time.

    lucky me?

  5. I think the zip service has improved quite a bit. I started a subscription in February and haven’t really had any problems – a few slow arrivals, but really no complaints. However, the availability of new releases seems to be better than it was, and the customer service support is much, much better than before.

  6. I agree with Doug about The Singing Detective. I thought it one of the most imaginative TV shows ever, along with Potter’s Pennies from Heaven (the TV version with Bob Hoskins, not the dreadful Steve Martin movie).

  8. Gee, only 1.58 per week?

    I get four movies per week with Zip.ca. About 16 movies per month for $25 is not bad at all!
