We spent the weekend on Pender Island, showing off our new property to some family and generally exploring the island. I was pleased with how much wildlife we came upon without even really trying. The place is overrun with deer and has a healthy population of eagles, hawks, ravens, osprey and dozens of other species of birds. We also saw an otter fishing (I’m definitely buying a zoom lens soon) and almost ran over a pheasant.
On Sunday, we rented bikes from Otter Bay Marina and went exploring. The first conclusion: Pender is freakin’ hilly (apparently the hilliest of the Gulf Islands). The second: I’m in appalling shape. Despite only riding 12 km (thank you, gmapPedometer),
I’m hurtin’ tonight. Regardless, it was enjoyable and I was really impressed with the lightness and smooth ride of my bike (a Giant Sedona LX, for future reference).
We wanted to say over night at the fancy, schmancy Poet’s Cove Resort, but it was all booked up. Instead, we broke my rule about eschewing bed and breakfasts and stayed at the Nosey Point B & B. It was centrally-located in a great, Victorian house and, most importantly, the owners were hands-off. I’d definitely recommend it for those visiting the island.
There are some unremarkable photos, if you’re interested.
I’d want to stay at Poets Cove just because of the name.
My parents stayed at the Aberdeen Mansion when they came to Vancouver. It’s a nice little Victorian style B and B located on Victoria and Napier near the Drive. I think the staff was pretty hands off, and it’s a nice place. They’d recommend it.
