I had a chat yesterday with my talented friend Kennedy about participating in the Reelfast 48-Hour Film Festival. Normally I wouldn’t qualify (given my utter lack of film production skills) but Kennedy thinks he may require somebody with my skill-set.
Apparently it’s quite a big deal these days, with over 70 teams entering last year. Though I’ve participated in a 24-hour play project in Victoria, I’ve never done a similar film project. Has anybody else? Has anybody watched the winning films? What were your impressions? Any advice? It’s not until August, but, you know, insert planning maxim here.
i’ve done a couple of them and damn they’re exhausting. the key is to go with the first great idea and run with it…without overthinking things too much.
the films i’ve seen have been fantastic! great ideas, very well put together and intimidating (!). some of the teams who enter are obviously professional.
I have a group of friends who enter every year in various different groupings, and have won awards on a few occasions. They’ve done some crazy stuff: a musical, a one man piece, etc., and through the mighty power of the internet you can watch a few of their entries at Steam Powered Films, should you wish.
I’ve been to a number of the galas. There’s an incredible range of films and production levels, from high school kids to folks who’re trying to have careers, but from what I can tell, it’s both incredibly fulfilling and incredibly hard work…. I always get the sense the folks involved are returning from a pilgrimage, somewhere far away and very much not of this culture.
Sorry, the above link should be to: Steam Powered Films…
