She’s a 21-year-old jazz singer, borne in Russian, grew up in Israel and lives in Canada. I know the trend is to teenage jazz divas, but Ms. Milman sounds to me like the real deal. She’s got a very classical voice, in a bit of a musical theatre style. She’s no Cassandra Wilson, certainly, but I like the way she belts out the standards. There’s some sample songs from her debut album on her (Flash-o-rama) site. She’s also playing in the Vancouver Jazz Festival, at the (always charming) Capilano College Performing Arts Theatre in North Van. It’s the day I get back from Gnomedex, but I may try to catch her show.
UPDATE: Does anybody want to go with me? If so, drop me an email.
Anyone who can be compared to Cassandra Wilson has got to be good. I’ll be looking for Sophie Milman, though I won’t be able to get to the Vancouver Jazz Festival.
