Via Derek, here’s an extensive series of short essays on great pop songs, from the cultural saviours at the BBC. Song Sold on Song covers everything from Otis Redding to Kylie. Here’s what they say about the latter:
Can’t Get You Out Of My Head was written by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis, formerly lead guitarist of ’70s glam rock band Mud. It catapulted Kylie to the top of the charts across half the planet and won its writers a trio of Ivor Novello awards. But it’s not all red carpet and accolades, even if you are part of a hit production line. Pop princess Kylie recorded the vocal for Can’t Get You Out Of My Head in Rod’s shed/studio at the bottom of the garden.
You know, forget about the essays. Instead, go play with this way-cool songwriting game. I just wasted 14 minutes of my life replicating “Sweet Jane” by the Velvet Underground.
sold no song, not song on song
What was the BBC signature pop song that intro’d all their broardcasts during the 2000 Sydney Olympics?
