Last night I was at the main branch of the Vancouver library for my mother-in-law’s book launch (you should buy a copy–heck, buy three). As I approached the exterior doors to the library’s wonderful concourse, I heard this cool, ethereal music. It turns out that Ensemble Symposium was performing “The Vertical Orchestra”. It’s a series of new compositions, with the six-member orchestra positioned on different levels of the concourse. The xylophonist, for example, was on the ground, but the sax player was probably five stories up. The result was this wonderful, resonant wash of sound. I snapped a few quick photos.
