Roland is very fond of calling our local light transit system Skyte. Personally, I don’t see what’s wrong with the original Skytrain, but I follow Roland’s logic in shooting for as short as possible. See also BART or Metro.
We were discussing this today after our meeting with the Raincity lads, and Kathleen, in her brilliance, came up with the even cooler (and, remarkably, more twee) Skytr. It sounds like Flickr, so it must be cool.

if you want the actual name in acronym form it’s BCRTC, which has far too many syllables for roland and just might pop his head off.
Anything that stops him from writing Skyte is okay with me.
I was browsing Flickr the other day and found out that Rosie O’Donnell has an account. See http://www.flickr.com/photos/rosie/. She also has a blog on Blogger. I find it really weird that the same person who wouldn’t allow the media to photograph her children eventually started running home videos on her Rosie show then moved on to a daily blog and Flickr account. At least she doesn’t have to fight with McCall’s about content, I guess.
Personally, I think it should be called the ‘A’ train.
That would allow you to say you were going to take the ‘A’ train (a la Duke Ellington), and would also put Vancouver in the elegant situation of having its main transit links be an ‘A’ train, a ‘B’ line and a Seabus.

Roland attempted to sucker me into his evil scheme at a beercast and I played along. I pointed out that Skytrain is such a generic name for the transit system that they use the same name in Bangkok (based on similar tech).
Skytrain is also the nickname for the Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Clearly our transit system could use a more unique name and Skyte is as good a name as any I’ve heard suggested.
Skytr doesn’t really roll off my tongue and clearly isn’t as fresh and scrumptious as Flickr.

Does solve my only problem with the phonetics of the word Skyte, which sounds like the foul-mouthed hip-hop word ‘skeet’. I’ll not define the latter for you.
We’ll try it on for a few days and see how it feels.
Not to mention that it also sounds like ‘shite’, which I probably don’t have to define for you.
