Last Star Wars Movie, My Hairy Tauntaun

I’m sure everybody else on the planet recognizes this, but I just want to say it out loud. The Lucas marketing machine is making hay over this being ‘the last Star Wars movie’. It’s a sound tactic. That’s why farewell tours work so well, and why The Who has had, like, seventeen.

As you no doubt know, Lucas originally conceived of this Star Wars thing as nine films. Treatments (bizarre as they may be), or at least summaries, exist for three more films.

Is Lucas Arts really going to leave at least a billion dollars of revenue sitting on the table? I think not. Attendance for episodes one and two demonstrates that you can sell people crap, label it Star Wars, and they’ll turn out in droves. And movie studios are hardly famous for their restraint, right?

Fear not, Star Wars geeks. I’m confident that I won’t go to my grave without having the opportunity to see Star Wars 7, 8 and 9.

  1. I was a Star Wars geek, when I was like.. 12 years old. I had every original action figure, including the rare version of Boba Fett only obtained from sending in those trademarks from the packages. Had Hammerhead the same way. Never broke my Wookie, but broke quite a few Stormtroopers.

    That was when I was 12. Maybe it’s a cliche, but after crap like the Wookie Christmas and Ewoks in Return of the Jedi, it all got very tired for me.

  3. I believe Lucas himself has said that 7, 8 and 9 will be made on television and he will be hands-off. No word on whether it will be live action, CGI (my preference) or cartoon. He probably wants to follow the success of the well received Clone Wars cartoon series, which follows the story between episodes 2 and 3.

  4. Little known is that the storyline changed drastically after the first movie (Hope) and prior to the second (Empire). So when Lucas says he envisionned 9 movies, then he’s just lying. The second Star Wars book was called The Glove of Vader or something like that (can’t remember which off hand). If you read that book, then you’ll see that Lucas is just bull-shitting. In fact, after reading that book, it’s my belief that Lucas himself didn’t know that Vader was Luke’s father until sometime between the release of the first two movies.

  5. I’ve read the book Randy, and you’re right. Speaking of books, they’ve already got some 3 part series on what happened after the movies (Hands of Thrawn series? I’m not sure). And Lucas said there’s plans for a TV series on Star Wars to come to air.

  7. It doesn’t matter if the books were revised during the process of creating the films. Many great works are revised from their original vision after the project undergoes development. The only thing the bothers me is people who write stories to go along with Star Wars because it’s Lucas’s vision. The TV series will probally kill the story aswell.

  9. I agree with Jason. Just look at what happened to Star Trek. “Voyager”: should have died the good death much sooner and “Enterprise” knew when the story just wasn’t working anymore. Hopefully Lucas, after finally redeaming himself as a director (Please don’t forget his ex-wife had to edit the miles of footage from bot American Graffiti AND “A New Hope” because Lucas flaked out, and Eps. I & II were definitly NOT up to Star Wars standards). I pray if there is a TV series he will still be hands on and not let the corporate Hollywood machine pervert his vision. Lucasfilm is and always shall be an INDEPENDANT movie company.

  10. I believe that If 7,8, and 9 would make good movies, if they turn them into a cartoon it would suck. If lucas did make 9 movies I think he should get someone else to direct it.

  11. For something that sells like star wars to just end is impossable it would be foolish to do so they will make more movies untill it dont sell no more it is how hollywood works the real question you should ask your self is will 7 8 and 9 be worth your time to watch

  13. If Episode 7,8,9 are created it will be done by Lucas. Mark Hamill himself talked about how him and Lucas had been discussing the notion, and agreed on dates of start and everything. This is no B.S.
    I think they will follow the Hands of
    Thrawn series dur to their already popular sales. Besides what books will everyone be reading now that Episode III is out, quasi completing the Star Wars Saga. There will be 9 movies.

  15. I heard on aanother web site that George Lucas said that if EpisodeIII makes number one in the box office of 2005 then he will consider doing Episodes VII VIII IX

  18. They cant end with Episode III, it was just too dark to finish off with, basically i feel like, ok we did 1,2 and 3, so that you’ll go back and watch 4,5,6 on dvd and whatnot, soon enough we will come back out from the applause and have an Encore!! Cheers mates…

  19. The name of Episode7 is supposedly going to be THE FALLEN HERO, Episode8 is supposedly going to be THE REPUBLIC IN CRISIS, and Episode9 is supposedly going to be VICTORY OF THE FORCE. Now thats counting on just what we know now, and usually the change the name for most StarWars movies before their released. If everything goes as planned we just might have another StarWars trilogy on hand, but that also doesn’t mean it’s going to come out right away you might have to wait an extra 2 or 3 years more than usual but I certain it will probably be worth the wait.

  20. I think that Lucas originally had plans for 7-8-9 but abandoned them while making the original trilogy. The first 3 movies left plenty of room for a prequel but none for a sequel, and the creation of one would be completely monotonous. The only thing that really could be tied up in the movie would be political establishment of the new republic, making the movies dryer then watching c-span at 2:00 in the afternoon
    The only way to perpetuate the series would be to introduce new characters/ conflicts that were not alluded to even slightly in the original films, like make a new Wookie nationalist movement or something ridiculous like that, slap a star wars logo on it, and officially ruin the series.

  21. Ya know, come to think of it I reallly don’t think you can kill StarWars as much as watching C-span. I do think it might be a little overboard to go out with a FOURTH(10-11-12) trilogy, I do think they should do the third(7-8-9) trilogy and either end the StarWars series right their or leave room for more novels, I do agree with you Daniel Clements (to an extent) I do believe a FOURTH trilogy could kill it but not the third.

  22. I really want Lucas to come out with a third trilogy, but the more I read on the subject, the less likely it seems. And Jag-X, I read the same info on supershadow’s website, but unfortunately, that guy is a con-artist. He makes things up and lives in a fantasy world. He dupes Star War fans into thinking he really knows Lucas and has all this behind the scenes info. I wish it was true, but it is not 😦

Ya know I also had that suspision too.(which really sucks) but I think you might be right, because some of the stuff on that website about what “George Lucas” was supposedly talking about(not that I don’t think George Lucas Isn’t the coolest)kind of seemed a little to good to be true. I guess you win some and you lose some. Elaya, you are not the first to comment on that sight although you are the first that I have seen that hasn’t used any profanity to talk about it. I was already starting to take a closer look at how “Real” everything sounded on Supershadow. I really do hope that they do 7 8 9 but we probably won’t find out anything if we go on “Supershadow”

  25. I’m keeping my fingers crossed on 7, 8, and 9. I’m hoping that Lucas is not admitting to his planned sequels because that would detract from the crowd draw of the Sith, since it’s referred to in magazines as being “the final episode ever made.” I mean it’s a long-shot, but we can hope can’t we!?

    And in regards to supershadow’s site, I was shocked when I read his “interview” with Lucas. He made Lucas out to be so rude and sick of Star Wars. I just checked the site, and apparently it’s been shut down. So, that’s the end of that. Let me know if you hear any good news!

Ya your right I can’t even find the supershadow website which means “He got busted” (he made Lucas out to look like he hated StarWars, which is not cool) I guess cheaters never win, I’m just so glad I saw the Light and turned from the path to the Dark side, becuase I would of been so confused if I hadn’t known he was a lier. Me being a huge StarWars fan that would have ruined my knowledge. I want to thank those who pulled me from the path of the “Darkside” (and confusion) and showed me the ways of the Jedi. Now I’m going to go outside and play Football. I still want an Episode 7 8 9 and I will continue my search for more information (just not on Supershadow-what a lier).

  27. Yeah guys the saga just needs to continue. Maybe GL will let his best friend Steven Speilberg to direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VII,VIII,IX. I hope prey GL redeems himself and goes back on his word on not making any more STAR WARS films. The Prequel Trilogy kind of sucked except STAR WARS: EPISODE III-REVENGE OF THE SITH which was awsome and totally was the best of the 3 Prequels. We need 3 Sequels because almost every STAR WARS fan is just dying to see what happens to Luke, Leia, Han and Lando after post EPISODE VI-RETURN OF THE JEDI and I’m one of them. Give GL maybe 8,10 or 15 years to decide if STAR WARS will continue. I only hope and prey.

  32. Episodes VII, VIII,& IX are over a billion dollars for GL to make. Only a Financial Fool would walk away from a billion dollars.

    Luke’s a Jedi now. Now what?

    Leia’s in-love with the wrong kind of guy. Now What?

    3p0 has no idea what’s going on, still. now what?

    There are too many loose ends to not be tiddied (cleaned) up! If GL has the three screen play treetments, he needs to do something with them.

    GL needs to finally finish what he started. Do not start something and walk away from it when there is more to be done.

    Anaikin left 3p0 unfinished in EP# 1. Nobody knows who finished him! Same may apply to 7, 8, & 9! At this point the one who will finish this story line for GL may be unknown!

  36. You know you have to weigh this out, you had the Original Star Wars trilogy that was pretty groundbreaking in its time. The movie industry hadnt seen alot of the effects they were using and the Movie biz had veered away from SciFi. If you just look at how the two trilogys connect, Its like A NEW HOPE was Lucas feeling around for a plot. So when you watch it 1-6, 3 and 4 dont connect just right. It all works and I love the series. My point being is now the second trilogy or (technically the first) where much anticipated because it tales the tale of Lord Vader and Luke and Leia’s birth. I think it’s done. I think Lucas is out of creative energy for this series, and the series has closure now, the beginning to end of Anakin Skywalker.
    I would love three trilogies. Well see, most of the rumors are being generated from SciFi sites, nothing reliable yet!

  37. I think StarWars episode 7 8 9 would be awesome but I do agree with you that alot of the news is coming from the fans and not the horses mouth.
