Today Donna pointed to a biker dating service. I snickered at this, but it makes sense–people seek mates with similar backgrounds and interests.
I got to thinking about how niche a dating site could get, and still be sustainable. Five minutes of searching got me the following:

- Recovering Mates (for recovering addicts)
- BBW Singles (that’s ‘big, beautiful women’)
- Black-White Singles
- Find Gay Tall Men
- Herpes Dating
- Date-A-Doc (for those gold diggers who like their alone time)
- Whispers4U (for disabled people)
- Adventist Options
- Rockabilly Dating
- The Atlasphere (“Connecting admirers of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged“–this must be a spoof)
What else you got? Surely we can find an overweight trans gendered Samoans dating site.

I don’t think the Ayn Rand thing is a spoof! (I’m tempted)
From my limited experience Ayn Rand admirers tend to have a bit of a different philosophy, it’d be great to have that as a stepping off point.
Passionate Ayn Rand fans tend, like her, to have no sense of humor whatsoever.
Spot on! Lack of sense of humour is one of my weak points.
I’m not certain if I’d be better served by someone who views the world as earnestly as I do, or by my current BF who insists on teasing me. While this is perhaps food for further thought, it does reawaken my appreciation of him for putting up with me. Thanks!

Check out http://consumating.com/ which isn’t really a niche dating site (it says it’s for hot geeky girls and indie rock boys, but that could mean anything these days), but does dating a little bit more Web 2.0-like, i.e. it has tags and RSS feeds and you can have a public profile associated with your nickname. Did I mention it has a weblog? http://consumating.typepad.com/
Of course, the only dating sites that work in getting you dates are (community) sites that aren’t dating sites, that is, sites that facilitate getting you *away* from your computer.
