If everyone reading this would please list (via the comments) the 5 most-played songs in their iTunes library, I’d appreciate it 🙂 I figure TUAW has a pretty broad readership so I should see a rather eclectic mix of stuff.
We needn’t limit it to iTunes–what are your five most-played songs? No lying or embellishing is allowed. If Kris Kros’s “Jump Around” is at number one, you’ve got to own up. Here’s what I’ve got:
1. “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) – Talking Heads
2. “I Fall in Love Too Easy” – Chet Baker
3. “Noah’s Dove” – 10,000 Maniacs
4. “Real Bad News (live)” – Aimee Mann
5. “The Blower’s Daughter” – Damien Rice
Ah, heck, here are the next five.
6. “Since I Fell For You” – Ella Fitzgerald
7. “Super Duper Love” – Joss Stone
8. “Small Black Box” – Michael Penn
9. “River (live)” – Travis
10. “Hello in There” – 10,000 Manaics
Of course, Heisenberg’s at work here. As I check out my most-listened-to songs, I’m listening to them again, thereby extending their lead. On the other hand, this exercise has encouraged me to make a smart playlist of the 4323 songs that have been played one or fewer times.
Your playlist is so girly, man.
1. Under Attack (Mamma-Mia soundtrack)
2. Eminem vs. Eurythmics mashup
3. I Feel Love, Blue Man Group
4. Real, William Shatner
5. BBC, Ming Tea
If you are interested in knowing which songs are being played by your friends.
Try audioscrobbler
It’s a social network designed around what people listen to. You install a plugin, and it keeps track for you.
Great way to meet people with similar tastes, and also find a whole bunch of new music.
Indeed, I signed up for Audioscrobbler, implemented the plugin and promptly forgot about it:

1. Thé à la Menthe – Nikkfurie
2. The Blood of Cu Chulainn – Michael and Jeff Danna
3. Forbidden Paradise – DJ Tiesto
4. Sic Transit Gloria – Brand New
5. Je veux qu’on baise sur ma tombe – Saez
And that list is odd, because I am not French, and when asked I describe myself as a fan of rock/alternative music. *shrug*
I listen mostly on my iPod shuffle, so my listening habits aren’t entirely well reflected in my iTunes most-played list, but anyway:
1. “Pocketbook” – one of my own songs. (How vain.)
2. “Baby It’s You” – The Beatles
3. “Soul Sauce” – Cal Tjader
4. “I Try” – Macy Gray
5. “Hella Good” – No Doubt
6. “The Stake” – Steve Miller Band
7. “Drive My Car” – The Beatles
8. “Hard to Handle” – The Black Crowes
9. “Slim Jenkins’ Place” – Booker T & the MGs
10. “Watching the Detectives” – Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Overall, surprisingly un-embarrassing.
Mashed potatoes *with* the skins – that’s probably how I’d describe my listening preference:
Tom Petty – Alright for Now
Blackmore’s Night – The Times are a Changin’
Eminem – 8 Mile
Belleville Rendez-vous
10,000 Maniacs – Noah’s Dove
Point of pickiness: “Jump Jump” is by Kriss Kross, “Jump Around” is by House of Pain. And yes, I did know that. However, you listen to Michael Penn, so all is forgiven.
“Teardrop” Massive Attack (35)
“Playground Love” Air (33)
“I’m a Mean, Mean Woman” Joan Osborne (31)
“Timebomb” Old 97’s (27)
“Rain” Patty Griffin (27)
“Let The Mystery Be” Iris Dement (25)
“Ghostwriter” RJD2 (25)
“I Saved The World Today” Eurythmics (24)
“Bad Day” R.E.M. (24)
“Home” Zero 7 (24)
“On the other hand, this exercise has encouraged me to make a smart playlist of the 4323 songs that have been played one or fewer times.”
Also, try a smart playlist with the least-recently played songs. Mine often gives me the nice “Ah – I haven’t heard that for a while” feeling.
Goodbye for Now – P.O.D.
Wish I Never Met You – State of Shock
Never Too Late – Three Days Grace
Show Me the Money – Petey Pablo
Diamonds and Guns – The Transplants
