Just some nerdy stuff that I had kicking around this weekend:
- Giant
robot dinosaurs. These are going to look ridiculous in 15 or 20 years,
but right now they’re pretty impressive. Note that these aren’t for a movie–they’re
actual functional dinosaurs that can walk around and roar at you. - Blogger receives
accreditation (New York Times decaying and registration required link)
for the White House press corps. Here’s a little known fact: the White House
press corps isn’t a particularly sought-after posting among journalists. It’s
tedious, stories never break there and suffers from wall-to-wall rhetoric.
Here’s a
related New York Times piece. - Witness the power and versatility of CSS.
- Jeremy and I talked
to Stowe Boyd for True
Voice, and the podcast has been syndicated to IT
Conversations. Presumably the scheduled guests got food poisoning. We’re
talking about "The Profession of Blogging". - I had a great time at Gnomedex last year, but I really didn’t care for Lake
Tahoe. There were threats that next year’s Gnomedex would be in Las Vegas,
which was also underwhelming. Instead, it’s
going to be in Seattle. Seattle’s a poor man’s Vancouver, but at least
it’s close. I’ll definitely be attending. - I’m not buying Steve
Rubel’s argument that blogs could convert MS Office 97 and 2000 readers
to 2003. The convergence between people with a eight-year-old program and
blogs has to be extremely small today. After all, 60%
of online Americans have still never heard of blogs. That’s "online
Americans"–there are no doubt lots of Office 97 and 2000 users who aren’t
online. I mean, blogs are great and all, and their readership is growing,
but let’s keep some perspective. - It’s a dating site for gamers
(via Wonderland).
"I enjoy long walks, sunsets and evenings spent in the glow of my PC, wielding my +4 Shellaleigh
of Shellacking". - Speaking of online games, Lord Vader pitches up in Star Wars: Galaxies.
- CBC
starts podcasting. Hurray for Quirks
and Quarks–I grew up on Bob McDonald (figuratively speaking).
You podcast link led me to /Nerd, which is really cool (especially for CBC). The RSS feed is thru FeedBurner, which makes subscription easy.
I couldn’t figure out the Bob McDonald thingy. This is more like CBC. Confusing, couldn’t find the RSS feed, didn’t even know it was podcasting.
Randy: The second link references Quirks and Quarks, a science show on the CBC hosted by Bob McDonald.
Dude, that CSS stuff you posted… that’s Dave Shea! He is my best friend’s husband. I still can’t believe he wrote this book and he was only 24.
