Bad Idea Jeans, Belfast Style

NOEL: So, Paddy, what do you figure is a good way to honour our fine city’s
industrial heritage?
PADDY: Are you meaning that Titanic business?
NOEL: Of course I am, ya idjit.
PADDY: I’ve got a brilliant idea!
NOEL: Let’s hear it then.
PADDY: How about we tow a replica of the thing that killed 1523 people into
the Belfast harbour? Wouldn’t that make a splash?
NOEL: Brilliant! I’ll ring the Lord Mayor!

Growing up in Belfast, it’s understandable if you might have a somewhat skewed
sense of reality. However, towing an iceberg into the city harbour as "a
symbol of hope" seems, well, pretty ill-advised. The artist in question
has this to offer as an explanation:

"It comes from the story of the Titanic … some people might see it
in bad taste and I suppose some might find it amusing, but I actually see
it as a deeply serious project," she added. "I like to think this
project is going some way to altering the damaged psyche of Belfast … It’s
about courageously facing into that which interrupted our journey."

She’s apparently keeping "the finale of her project a secret". I
can only assume it features high explosives and an effigy of the Queen.

  1. She’s working on a feasibility study with a local filmmaker eh….. well, I really enjoy giant organic art, but a melting iceberg? The explosives and the queen would be pretty cool, what about some secret sculpture emerging from the inside of the iceberg spewing Guiness-foam, hastening the melting of the iceberg.
