Via Metafilter, apparently an Oklahoma manufacturer is selling “The Rod”, a $5 disciplinary device:
”Spoons are for cooking, belts are for holding up pants, hands are for loving, and rods are for chastening,” read the advertisement she saw nearly two years ago for the 22-inch nylon rod. It also cited a biblical passage, which instructs parents not to spare the ”rod of correction.”
Here’s a scan of the brochure, on a page dedicated to banning the device. Apparently it features a ‘non-slip grip’ that’s ‘durable for years of use’ and offers ‘more precise control during application’.
What a useless product. My mother used hot-wheels tracks.
Ooh. I want one.
I was surprised to learn that, in Canada, it’s still legal to strike a child aged 3 to 12.) However, Canadian law prohibits the use of an object to strike a child. I’m surprised the US company you mentioned sells rods. Most people used wooden spoons, brooms and belts when I was growing up. (Not that I’m condoning that.)
