Helping Hand Canada

Nick writes to point me to Helping Hand Canada:

Because of the gravity of events in South Asia this site will for the time being focus primarily on information that is relevant to helping the relief effort there.

Our hope is that the site can increase the awareness of the devastation and the need for individuals, communities and companies to pledge their support.

I’ve been amazed by the global response to the disaster–it must be one of the largest aid mobilizations in history. I’d be curious to see a site that aggregates all of money and effort being raised and distributed in southeast Asia. I actually heard an interview with somebody from Medecins Sans Frontieres who said that they’ve got more money than they can spend on this disaster. He didn’t want to mislead people in thinking that further money donated to MSF would be spent on the Tsunami disaster.

  1. Check out Wikipedia’s article on humanitarian respond to the tsunami. (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-11,GGLD:en&q=wikipedia+humanitarian+tsunami) You should be able to find a country-by-country summary.

I noticed that most of the relief organizations have disclaimers that say that money in excess of the funds required will be moved to other areas of need. I appreciated this, as I thought it was unfair that the government would match my contribution for tsunami relief, but not for fighting disease in Africa. However, knowing that the money can be moved to other accounts, I felt more comfortable supporting the tsunami relief effort.
