MASCAL

By now, you’ll have heard about the recent attack on a US mess hall near Mosul, Iraq. Today, via Blogdex, I read a harrowing and graphic account of the attack by an American Army chaplain:

I found “Betty” on a stretcher being tended by nurses. I introduced myself and held her hand. She looked up at me and said, “Chaplain, am I going to be alright?” I said that she was despite the fact that I could see she had a long road to recovery ahead of her.

‘MASCAL’ is military jargon for a ‘mass casualty’ event. This piece isn’t for the faint of heart. Mind you, if you’re considering joining the military, I’d recommend you read it a few times.

  1. The thing that bothers me the most…

What the hell were they expecting? That the Iraqis would just roll over and take it? Tragic though it may be, I’m surprised it took til now for this to happen. *sigh*

  2. Merry Christmas. War is over. I wish. This war is a mess on all sides.

20% of US military deaths in Iraq are due to non-active activity. Doesn’t that suggest that the US soldiers are poorly trained/supervised and working with shoddy equipment?
