Beasties Meet the Beatles

Following in the footsteps of the Grey Album, Metafilter points to this fantastic mashup of the Beastie Boys and the Beatles. Whatcha Want, Lady? (dig the Dylan sample in the middle there–is that in the Beasties’ song, or an addition?) and Tripper Trouble are both great. These guys are going to need a BitTorrent feed pronto. To see if and how this meme runs, I note that I was the 12,306th site visitor.

A side benefit of these inter-generational mashups is that they can introduce musical styles to new audiences. I’m not sure my Dad would dig it, but he might listen to a few tracks because of the sort of contextual grounding that the Beatles tracks offer. I’ve never cared much for rap, but I do listen to the Grey Album occasionally. I wonder what the Beasties think of it?

  1. They’ve been rolling over in their graves for some time now. I haven’t heard this recent mashup (mashups have never been compelling), but I did really enjoy the Grey Album (Jay-Z’s Black Album mixed with the Beatles’ “White Album”), though it’s not really a true mashup. DJ Danger Mouse did a lot of remixing and looping of the samples, and added some beats as well. It’s my vote for album of the year.
