Wil Smith in Hitch

You know, Wil Smith has made some dubious movie choices, but he’s the best leading man of his generation. Yes, he tends to do big, dumb action movies. But it takes a certain kind of actor–charismatic, confident, arresting–to pull off those roles. Additionally, he has the same rare quality that Harrison Ford has–the appearance of fallibility. You’re never entirely certain that things are for the best, because cracks always show in the hero.

Smith has more versatility than Ford or nearly any other leading man of his age. Consider his excellent work in Six Degrees of Separation or Ali. There are better actors, but none who combine Smith’s hutzpah, charm and comic timing.

This is just a long introduction to an amusing trailer for Wil Smith’s latest film, a goofy-looking comedy called Hitch.

  1. I did enjoy Bagger Vance–I think it’s Smith in his most subdued role. Then again, I like most sports theme movies. As for WWWest, it’s Kline who’s made a horrible horrible role choice.
