The Star Wars Christmas Special

“My ideal Christmas Eve is getting drunk on eggnog and watching the Star Wars Christmas Special.” That’s what my friend said to me yesterday, as we discussed how fraught the Christmas season can be. I’ve never seen this Yuletide strangeness that original aired in November, 1978. Here’s a surprise–there’s a website dedicated to it:

Most websites that cover the Holiday Special can’t seem to get past how awful they thought it was. We are well aware here that this particular film is not the brightest star in the Star Wars galaxy; however, we feel that there are a lot of good or enjoyable aspects about the Holiday Special that are often overlooked. Additionally, for those of us who saw the show during its original airing in 1978, there is a certain feeling of nostalgia attached to it that is trapped in that time period, and the Holiday Special is part of that.

There are lots of photos on the site, and they’re pretty hilarious. Apparently the Empire comes to visit Chewbacca’s family, and there’s a ceremony reminiscent of Eyes Wide Shut with Luke and the gang.

On a related, amusing front, I give you the 10 least successful holiday specials of all time. I found ‘A Canadian Christmas with David Cronenberg’ particularly funny.
