Only You Can Save Mankind

Via BoingBoing, this musical adaptation of a Terry Pratchett novel premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival:

Only You Can Save Mankind is a charming and fine young adult novel about a kid who discovers that the Space Invaders he chases onscreen are a distant fleet who are being massacred by his hand. Like all Pratchett, it is funny as anything, and like all of Pratchett’s YA novels, it’s eminently suitable for grownups as well.

This sounds like great fun. It’s nice to hear about a successful original musical in a world of nostalgic shite like Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You and Moving Out.

Apparently it’s currently being played on BBC 7, and you can hear part one here until November 15. I have fond memories of the Edinburgh Fringe–it’s the biggest and best in the world.

  1. Don’t get me started.

All of these derivative musicals based on popular artists’ music represent a serious threat to the musical as a viable industry and an artistic genre. Maybe, like ballet and opera, the musical will be consigned to history, but that’s unfortunate.
