Foiling the Ticketmaster Monopoly

The always-interesting Waxy (his/her/their interests and mine seem to intersect perfectly) directs us to Brown Paper Tickets, a low service fee alternative to TicketMaster (who I’ve mentioned before) and the other dens of iniquity.

Ticket buyers and event organizers have been held hostage by ticketing companies long enough. Our mission is to keep as much money in everyone’s pockets as possible. That way, producers can put on more shows, performers can earn a better living, and ticket buyers can see more shows! That’s what building a community is about.

They claim, erroneously, to be “the first and only fair-trade ticketing company!” If they’d done their research (or driven up the road from their Seattle HQ), they’d have learned about Festival Box Office. It’s a side project by the folks who run the Vancouver Fringe Festival, and is a non-profit venture aimed at helping out arts organizations who don’t want to sell tickets through Ticketmaster. Admittedly, Festival Box Office is local, while Brown Paper Tickets has national ambitions, but they still weren’t first.
