I’ve watched a couple episodes of Lost, an ABC show about plane crash victims surviving on a deserted tropical island with some weird secrets. I was going to describe it as original, but then I remembered that show with Ginger and the Professor. Regardless, it’s not utterly crap, the setting is lovely, and the cast is fetching.
In the last episode I watched, I noticed that Dominic Monaghan (formerly Merry in the Lord of the Rings movies) had some words tattooed on his upper arm. They read “living is easy, with eyes closed”. That, of course, is a lyric from the Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever. In a world of celtic and Asian characters tattooed on backs everywhere, I thought that was pretty cool. It got me thinking what lyrics I’d get put on my arm:
- “A man in a crisis falls back on what he knows best. A murderer to murderer, a thief to theft.” By the Cowboy Junkies, and a bit long, really.
- “Memories are just dead men making trouble.” The Junkies, quoting a poet (EM Forster, maybe?). Sounds tough, but not quite me.
- “I started out on burgundy, but soon the harder stuff.” From Bob Dylan. Too bad I don’t drink.
- “We sit here stranded, though we’re all doing our best to deny it.” Again Dylan, again too long.
- “I’m the first mammal to make plans.” Pearl Jam. It’s got a certain pithiness.
- “Just take what you need and leave the rest.” From The Band. A nice sentiment, but a bit obvious.
- “Shakespeare, you’re a drunken savage.” I like the absurdity of it, and the fact that it’s by the nation’s favourite rock band, the Hip. That’s the closest I’ve gotten to something I might, in some parallel universe, tattoo on my arm.

In my defense, I never said they were stupid. I did say that I thought people didn’t give their tattoos enough thought:

I still think it’s weird that the walls of tattoo shops are lined with sample tattoos. As I mention, this seems to imply that when they enter the store, do not know what kind of tattoo they want.

i got my tattoo at 15, and it means alot to me my grandma died and its her favourite flower a lilley, im now 17 and looking at a new tattoo for my grandad who pass away not so long ago.
I know what you’re saying about people not thinking about what tattoo they get. i have a friend who has just turned 17 and he has 14 tattoo’s (12 of which are stars) and not a single one means a thing to him. i got my tattoo at the age of 16 but i designed it myself and it means a lot to me. Im in a band and have been for the past 5 years and so i got something that will always remind me of the amazing times i had and will hopefully keep having.

I’ve met people who actually told me they wanted a tatt that didn’t mean anything so they’d never regret it… I guess they’re afraid they’re going to grow up one day and not believe in the things they thought they did when they got the tatt. But tweety bird? Come on. And if you’re getting the idea off the wall of the parlor you’re in, you’re a jerk, a real jerk. Getting a tatt is only half experience, the other half is what will stay with you the rest of your life… So if you’re only getting one to have one, because someone in your life might think you’re cooler for it, then I have NO RESPECT.
couldnt agree more… although to be perfectly honest my first tattoo was “off the wall” as you put it. i’d been looking for a wolf for a fair while, and found one in a catalogue i liked. i redrew it, and got it done a week later. since then ive thought more about it… it was probably a mistake. its very black and the lines are fine and close together so it has the potential to warp in the next few years.

Tattoos are ART, not diary as you seem to think. I am all for people only getting tattoos that symbolise a moment in their life but some people are fans of tattoos, art, culture and getting works of art on their bodies is a tribute to that. Non of my tattoos mean anything but they are all intricate, long, painstaking work that i am absolutely proud of and i wont be ashamed of them because they dont symbolise some point in my life

Not my favorite song by MCR, even tho I love them all, but I think it just goes with someone’s attitude from NJ.
However, my fav MCR song is Cemetery Drive and a lyrics from that would be cool but I wouldn’t know what to put.

I just got “Never Too Late” tattooed on my right forearm. It’s the title to a song by Three Days Grace that talks about suicide and how it’s never too late. I have dealt with many people in my life attempting suicide. Recently a close friend of mine committed suicide and it helps me to deal with what happened. I have her favorite flowers next to the script as well as a bird flying away to symbolize that you can be set free because I know I have. If you’re planning on getting a tattoo make sure that it’s something that is meaningful to you because you don’t want the same dolphin tattooed on you that 100’s of other people have- yes it may be pretty and you may like dolphins but do something at least to personalize it for yourself.

I have a tat with lyrics. I got it for my 17th birthday last year.
Yeah, I might be young, but that doesnt automatically make me stupid. I put plenty of thought into my tattoo, and I’m sure it will always have a lot of meaning to me.
I got “follow your bliss” in cursive under a realistic looking, and very beautiful sparrow.
The lyrics come from my all time favorite band, Senses Fail. This band has been my favorite band for over five years, and still are my favorite band to this day. They probably always will be my favorite. I also feel like I can really relate to almost all of their songs.
Now to explain the meaning behind the lyrics and the bird? Well, before I got the tattoo, I was going through a really tough time, trying to make a life changing decision, and to me, “follow your bliss” means find your happiness. So whenever I’m not happy, I just look at my tat and think of the decision I’m making and whether or not that decision would make me happy in the long run. As for the bird, it represents freedom to me. So all put together, I’m basically making the statement that I have the freedom to make myself happy.

Whose to say that just because you get a tattoo off a wall it doesnt mean anything. I have 3 tattoos, all very personal and meaningful, but I would never object to anyone getting something that they find appealing. Tattoos are supposed to be art, and art doesnt have to be unique or personal, and saying it does is redic. Maybe someone really likes tweety, whatever the reason, it’s theirs, and we should respect that.
Call me silly but I have Dude tattoo’d on my hip, because dude where’s my car was the first movie I saw with my best friend of over 8 years, and she has sweet, some people think it’s lame, but to me it’s more than most people will ever know. When I met a certain famose person who I look up to and they autographed me I tattoo’d it on my body, because since the time I was in 6th grade till the time I turned 23 I had the biggest crush/ held the upmost respect for this man, and it was another memory in my life that I didnt want to forget, and as for my 3rd… it’s just something speacial for myself.

These aren’t lyrics, but they are powerful words in my perspective. I’ll get them tatooed soon enoug and I only hope someone reads them and finds the beauty in them that I see.

I’m fifteen, I already have one tattoo, and will be getting my secong in one month. I’m young, but my mind is clear on what it wants, and I’m nobody to stop it. My first is very private; but it is just as meaningful. I know I won’t regret it. My next tattoo will be large, and i’d explain it, but it’s a very long story, and it happens to be mine. i want to get a tattoo on my wrist that will remind me of my relationship between my boyfriend and i. we have been dating for 19 months and have been through so much together. we want to be together for the rest of our lives, but even if we break up, i want to be reminded of the memories and what he meant to me. he is my first love and the one boy i will ever love this way. my ideas are:
1. a heart split into two and shaped into puzzle pieces to fit together. this is because we always say our hearts were meant to fit together perfectly. others hearts may try to fit with ours, but only his will fit with mine perfectly.

I turn 18 in about two weeks and getting a tattoo has been what I’ve planned on getting for a long time so I’ve been thinking about this for awhile. I have a few ideas for tattoos and they all center around words and lyrics because those always hold more meaning to me than pictures. For my first I’m contemplating:

I am booked to get my tattoo in two weeks. I’m having a music stave on my right shoulder blade, with notes from possibly the most beautiful Pink Floyd song ‘Us and Them’ and then underneath, I’m getting lyrics from Pink Floyd’s ‘Have A Cigar’
The lyrics I’m having are ‘They’re Gonna Love You’
The song is about the controversial music industry, which is what I work in.
The lyric has double meanings for me, In that, I want to remind myself to never become the person I despise (in the sense of my career path) like the people Floyd sing about in the song.
And that I want to remind myself that I am a person worth loving, and that people do and always will want to love me.
The notes from Us and Them represent me being a peaceful person. I think there is too much hate in this world, and disagree a lot with it. So looking at the song, you see that its about war, but not only war in the sense of battle, but war in the sense of unity and segregation, between people.
I’m 18 in October and despite my parents being all snobby about tattoos, i really want one, definitely lyrics because music means so much to me.
I’m thinking about
“Dorothy was right though” by the Arctic Monkeys, meaning that despite where you are and who you are with, there is no place like home.
I also really like the line “Perhaps fuck off might be too kind” but am definitely NOT getting that, bit rude thanks!?

So, Im not sure how to do this because I wanted to post something where someone posted what they just recently got as a tattoo. It said that they got “Follow your bliss”. Some of you may know that this is a lyric in one of Senses Fail song, although, they borrow the thought from Joseph Campbell. I wanted to let the guy know, and give him a quote of Joseph Campbell talking about his principle of life. Hey how come nobody wants any Lady Gaga lyrics tattooed on them? Or the Backstreet Boys?! Not even Fergie’s stuff?! For my next tattoo… I think I’ll get to get “Let’s have some fun, this beat is sick I wanna take a ride on your disco stick.” on my ass.
Just kidding. I am getting either a lyric or a famous quote… likely it’ll be in french as it’s my first language. Likely it’ll be partially tribal in the middle of my upper back reading something like: “Mais les yeux sont aveugles. Il faut chercher avec le cÅ“ur.”
Meaning… But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart.
And regardless of whether there is meaning or not behind the tatt you chose… make sure you put alot of thought into it.

I gave up hope after searching for a few months to find one, then I listened to this song, which I listen to daily at least and I just realised that those were the words I should get.

I am 19 years old and I have three tattoos. All three mean a great deal to me. My first was a treble clef with a yellow rose in the center in honor of my grandfather. The yellow rose his favorite flower and the treble clef because he bought me my first amplifier. This is on my ankle . The second tattoo is on the back of my neck. It is a treble clef as well with a pink crown on top. This one is in honor of my Grandmother. She inspired me to become a musician. She was my own personal Simon Cowell if you will…and she always called me her little princess…(I was the only girl in her family for 50 some years). The third is on my foot and its simply the words defy gravity. Yes it is from Wicked. But the meaning of it to me is what the song represents. Standing on your own and not letting anyone hold you back. Have fun and live your life the way you want to. Dont be afraid to be who you are. A great reminder. I am currently thinking about getting my fourth tattoo. I am stuck though between two designs. One is to get two Swallow (birds) one on each shoulder blade and in between having the quotes. Without love we are birds with broken wings. The other idea is to get a butterfly and the lyrics “My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies…”- The Show Must Go On-Queen. Just make sure your tats have a special meaning to you.
Kayla, I couldn’t agree more with your last line, your tats sound great to me, I have 3 tats all devoted to my children, my first one is a large papyrus-type scroll on my rt upper arm, it has the lyrics from fairytale of new york “Can’t make it all alone, I built my dreams around you” it’s devoted to my eldest son who had a very serious accident aged 5 mnths it was xmas time and I used to sing to him to calm him down, but I always choked when I got to that line so it seemed nice and apt to get the tat, my 2nd one is an identical scroll on the opposite arm but it reads from the lyrics of a Stone Roses song, I had separated from my kids mum and was very upset one day, my youngest son just lifted my head and smiled motionless for about 3 or 4 minutes it made me melt, the lyric reads ” I really dont think you know that I’m in heaven when you smile”. For yrs now ive been contemplating what words i love enough to get them tattooed. I’ve decided on three things:
1. hold your head high heavy heart – skeptics and true belivers by the academy is…
2. 1928- forever young -1936 (a tattoo in rememberance of my grandmothers. the years they were born rather than the years of their deaths (one of them is still living) because i’ll always remember them healthy and happy. also i’m gonna have my 81 yr. old grandmother write it and have it inked in her handwriting.)
3. while there is life there is hope -cicero (Roman orator, statesman and philosopher) it is normally written in latin but i want it in hebrew because when i look at it i want to think Jesus is reminding me that while i still have life i’ll always have hope.
That makes me feel so weird.. The Romans killed jesus (if he existed at all!) why not be reminded by Cicero?

My Uncle recently comitted suicide and I want to somehow incorporate the lyrics with a memorial for him…if that makes sense. Any ideas?

I have a heart I designed on the inside of my left wrist, at a slight angle. It’s there to represent that I wear my heart on my sleeve, but also to remind me that I shouldn’t so much…
It’s at a slight angle because I want some words next to it. I was thinking of “Fill or burst…” Then “…break or bury.” (from Dashboard Confessional) on my right wrist to follow on. Had this idea for years and it doesn’t seem to go away! Haha.

I recently had a bad break up and Taste of Red was our song, the first girl I’ve ever loved and I’d liek to be able to look back fondly so that last one would mean alot. Also interested in getting ‘Every song ends, is that any reason not to enjoy the music?!’ somehwere on me. It’s from One Tree Hill but, it always effected me personally.
My friend had an incredible idea to get the first three lines to Hallelujah wrapped around his left forearm ‘I heard there was a secret chord, that David played ad it pleased the Lord but, you don’t really care for music do you?’ Little annoyed he had the idea first haha.

It was too hard finding a short enough line from the song so I just choose Breathe, just as simple as that. I’ve been very thoughtful about this tattoo since it’s my first, and I’ve considered it for a year now, and on my 18th birthday I’m doing it as a gift to myself. Pink Floyd is my all time favourite band, and the whole TDSOTM album is just the best. Too bad it’s difficult having a whole album tattooed then

When I was considering getting a tattoo of a Shakespeare quote, I particularly liked this line from my favourite sonnet (116):
“It is an ever-fixed mark, which looks on tempests and is never shaken”.

The quote is describing love.

I’m going to be getting my first tattoo pretty soon here and what I want to get are a part of the lyrics to Beautiful by Eminem. I want this because not only do I really love Eminem and the things he writes but I love the song and like if you’ve ever listened to that song it really is a great song and I think it’s really meaningful. I have a couple others planned.
I am hopefully getting a tattoo next month. I had a period in my life where I cut my left arm. It isnt too attractive now & I want a tattoo to cover up the scars.
So far I have…
-cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life
-because the world will never take my heart
-our scars remind us that the past is real
-have faith in me
-love is the weapon for this wounded generation
-she hold the hand of the devil and thinks she’s free
when there is nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire
-deliver us from evil
-for a minute there I lost myself, I lost myself
-no lies, just love

In my opinion, if you can’t make a final choice between so many options, you should wait. You’re young, give yourself some times. I wanted a half-sleeve at 14 and I finally got it at… 32. I’m happy I waited cuz I know I would now regret what I wanted on my sleeve when I was younger.

Lou Reed is the man. I always loved that VU song Candy Says and the line ‘what do you think I’d see, if I could walk away from me?’ rad falsetto, worthy of a tattoo i reck. Or, ‘I don’t know why you say goodbye, I say hello.’ CAuse the beatles are fucking awesome.

I already have 2 tattoos including a half sleeve I got 2 years ago. For my next tattoo, I wanted “LET IT BE” from the Beatles on my wrist as I went through lots of bad times this past 3-4 years and even if it stressed me beyond words, everything eventually got better even if it was out of my control. Basically I am learning to trust life a bit more.
Only, “LET IT BE” seems to be more and more popular
so I will probably get “There will be an answer” instead (still lyrics from Let it be). Or perhaps “There will be an answer” in black ink and under it “Let it be” in white ink.
I’m not 100% sure so I’ll keep thinking about it for now. For sure, I plan to put it on my lower arm, under my half-sleeve.

I’ve got “Hey Ho Let’s Go” tattooed across my inner biceps. It’s readable when I hold my arms out with my palms up. It may seem silly, but I got it because it was a kind of battle cry for a military unit I was in. In essence, it’s like a positive affirmation for me.
Another great lyric that is really long, but that I think would make a great tattoo comes from the Drive By Truckers song “The Opening Act”:
“And it’s all such a fleeting thing, so I guess we best try to enjoy it. All this beauty and just enough time to figure out how to destroy it.”
That lyric has always stuck with me and I think it’s incredibly profound.
I’ve got lyrics from the Edith Phiaff song tattooed on my arm. It says ‘Je ne regrette rien’, translation; I have no regrets.
