About a year and a half ago, I wrote about this BBC story. It describes a contest for Brunel University’s final year design and technology students, in which one student invents swimming goggles that play music using (ew) bone induction. Today, Engadget reports on the SwiMP3 (that name’s overly twee, isn’t it?), the ‘first waterproof MP3 player to use bone conduction technology’. A year and a half from laboratory to swimming pool. I hope the Brunel student patented that badboy.

It’s great to see some of my fellow students recognized here on Barefoot. As an ex-graduate (2002) of Brunel University’s Design and Technology course, I can truly say that for students with limited resources and funds they do come up with some real groundbreaking ideas. I’m happy to say I know some of those people mentioned in the BBC article, but I’m sad to report that from this academic year (2004-2005) the Design and Technology course has been cancelled by the University. A sad time for Product and Industrial Design.
As an aside – see another project that was featured on the BBC site for my graduation year – http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2269144.stm – I actually built that model featured (though my friend did all the electrical gubbins)!!
